I do however need as many units as I can for the era of occupation.

Units eh? Are you looking for Fairline style units then? What kind of map will you be using? Do you have a rough units list on hand? Who do you see the playable civ's being?

Its certainly an interesting idea, to my knowledge there hasn't been one before. I could easily be wrong, but still I would love to watch this one in particular in development.

have a T-64 MBT, many russians still think it is better than the T-72, plus the T-64 was used as a base to build the T-80,

Very good tank there Erika, did you modify it yourself? Its just the kind of style in armored units that I think would be best used in this case... that is assuming this is indeed an MGE scenario.

Put an end to popups!

I myself would suggest doing it from the Mujehidin's point of view, as the Soviet perspective may be a bit too easy. Just my opinion, though.

I'll be using a large map.

One Civ Soviet Army

Another Civ The Afghan Government

the rest, various disparate muhajadeen factions.

The Units?

Hind helicopters, T-72's BMP's various soviet special forces, and Afghan Government troops and Soviet Army forces.

Soviet Bombers Soviet Fighters. I don't really know the makes of such,

The Units I'd like to be along the lines of the design Nemos.

Soviet Frustration in trying to maintain a stable government, and withdraw without the state collapsing would be as good as the Muhajadeen viewpoint.

Fair enough point. Another suggestion is working some way to simulate American aid of the Mujehidin factions, either in pure gold, or units generated with stingers and such.

Ahhh, so your a fan of the Nemo school of design eh? I can respect that. Nemo's graphics were afterall the begining of modern isometric graphics in Civ II.

How many neighboring civ's will you include? Will Iran or Pakistan come into play at all? Perhaps under the storyline that if the Soviets are somehow able to secure Afghanistan that further expansion into Central Asia would be desired? Or looking at it the other way giving other civ's such as Iran or Pakistan to become directly involved in the conflict in one way or another.

Yeah, I could involve Pakistan, but then I'd be worrying about them both declaring war against each other, you how Civ is.

Brilliant

Is it hard to make vehicles? Did the Afghan army have good weapondry, tanks and planes?, was it effective?

Oh I wouldn't think you'd need to design most of the vehicles yourself Communism. We've come to a point in Civ II scenario making that I'm sure many if not all of the units you'll be needing have already been made.

I know for a fact that there are plenty of Soviet hellicopters, fighters and bombers... not to mention the boatloads of Soviet tanks available. I'm sure if you post a preliminary unit list with specific makes and models and perhaps a reference pic or two then the units will just come flooding in.

Also, I'm somewhat of a flag and unit shield graphic designer if your in need of some period flags as well.

Rather than rely on random bits of history, why don't you try researching the topic for yourself?

AFAIK, Lester W. Grau is the leading English language writer on the war. Quite a few of his articles (including some brief, but informative, histories of the war) are available online via the US Army's Foreign Military Studies Office and would make a good starting point. Check them out at: http://fmso.leavenworth.army.mil

IIRC correctly the Soviets would be using more or less the same kind of weaponry they would in Europe, with several exceptions. For example the more sophisticated tanks such as the T-72 and T-80 would not be present as they had a weaker suspension and could not handle the rocky Afghan terrain. So the mainstay of the Soviet Armoured divisions would be tanks such as the T-55 and T-62, with AFVs such as the BRDM, BMP, and some airdroppable tanks and self-propelled guns in use with the paratroopers.

We would also see a heavy reliance on helicopters like the US did in Vietnam. In this case we should expect to see use of the Mi-24 Hind as an attack/transport helicopter and the Mi-8 as a transport helicopter. As for aircraft, the Sovs made extensive use of attack aircraft like the Su-25 Frogfoot because of the type of warfare they were facing.

The Afghan National Army proably used the same kind of equipment, albeit less advanced.

The Muhajadeen, of course, basically fight on foot and horseback, or on Toyota trucks as Harry has pointed out.
