Actually, I am adopted, and used to be convinced that Dave was the name given to me at birth, which would make all this incredibly freaky/cool.
But I saw the adoption papers a few years ago, and no, no Dave.
But here's something freaky: when I was in college, I took a fiction-writing class; the best story I wrote -- which had lots of autobiographical elements, as college fiction will -- featured a protagonist named "James Kozak." Years later, after my father died, I saw my adoption papers for the first time, and learned that my name at birth, prior to adoption (at the age of 3 weeks), was . . . James Kozak.
Though, again, not Dave...

Damnit, I have to revive this thread.
Some guy just strode confidently up to my desk and boomed out, "Dave!"
I said, "no, I'm John."
He said, "Oh, sorry, I'm looking for Dave Xblkrupf [we'll let that stand in for my unique and hard-to-pronounce last name]"
I said, "I'm John Xblkrupf"
He said, "Oh, okay, John then..."
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, WHY "DAVE?!"
There, I feel better now...
