Pick a new choice for yourself Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

If you could choose 1 thing differently in your life, what would it be?

I'm intrigued by the notion that each life touches so many others, and how the consequences of the choices made by one person affect so many other people.

It's not so much the regret, but the differences in our life from the choices that we make, and how the seemingly inconsequential can prove the most important in determining what kind of life we will lead.

So what will it be?

My one thing would be to not have dropped out of college 11 years ago, and thus not having to face the prospect of starting university this year at the age of 34.

Interesting question. I suppose I should have studied more for my degree to get a better grade, but I have managed in the long run and I don't think it made *that* much difference. Maybe fixed my depression as soon as it started (18 years old) rather than waited until my mid 20's - who knows what would have happened...

This is why I wouldn't want to change very much at all. Currently I quite like being myself. I'm frequently awkward, lazy, unmotivated and anti-social, but I don't think any one thing could correct those, and any change I would make would alter all the good things as well.

I would like a new alarm clock though. One I can't sleep through.

Now what are you depressed about? You seem like a pretty cool geezer with a lot going for you. Realise it's neurochemical and beat it by whatever means necessary, and never discount the meds as being able to rectify it. It depends on the nature of your depression...

In short... I hate myself, everybody else, and I want to die.

Except you Provost, you are awesome!

I think I'm genetically predisposed to have depression. My grandmother had it really bad also.

A lot going for me? BWAHAHA...

I'm 24, I deliver pizzas, haven't had a girlfriend in 2 years... I've pretty much given up on ever having sex again. I have no job prospects. I'm not motivated to do anything. I'm about 50 lbs. overweight and not motivated to lose it again (because I was down to 190 and very fit about 2 years ago). It takes all my will power not to slit my wrists or tape a bag over my head.

I got accepted to Devry University, but I have no motivation at all. And plus, it's expensive. $460 a credit hour.

The only thing going for me is my family, who has supported me in the last 2 years.

I'm seeing one therapist who keeps telling me, "just think happy thoughts".

And I'm seeing a neuropsychiatrist who doesn't seem to have much of a clue when it comes to medicines... I've tried just about every medicine available with none having much of any effect.

Most recently, he prescribed Dexidrine, hoping it would give me a kick in the ass, but my insurance company is being ****ing *******s and making me jump through hoops to get the medication. I was supposed to start it on Monday... it's now Thursday, and it looks like I'm going to have to pay for the medicine out of pocket because the insurance company isn't getting back to the pharmacy. Managed Care sucks. The US health care system sucks. And my family is one of the fortunate ones. Isn't that scary?

Anyways, I don't want to threadjack anymore. I'll make a Sava thread later.

Suffering from ads?

Er, Sava, I'm only 21 but I've never had a girlfriend or sex at all, or a job, and am essentially a drain on my family and society until such time as I get off my lazy butt and publish something, so I have priority whining rights over you.

For meds, I suggest Zoloft or Prozac. Even if they don't work, the side effects are great. I'm on Prozac and I take like half a drink to get hammered, and I guy I know is on Zoloft, he says that it makes it almost impossible to come during sex, so he can keep going for over an hour without trying. The guy's a total jerk but he can still get laid by advertising the fact that he can get a girl off like eight times in a row. So even if your antidepressant "doesn't work," it'll still give you something to smile about.

hmm this is a tough one--- I'm 37 and there are things where I don't like what I did but ultimately they resulted in my ending up in my current situation with a wonderful wife and child. I wouldn't want to do anything that would change my current situation but I think I could come up with a couple of times when I could have broken up with someone better . Also there is a female friend where we never went for it but in later years we both confessed that we would have been willing-- Its the type of thing where it would be fun to do a sci-fi alternate universe thingy to see how it would have gone

Stay away from SSRIs, they have been linked to suicide, are known to cause dependancy, and have been known to wear off after awhile.

As I understand it, the brain trying to retain homeostasis will downregulate in response to the extra Seratonin, causing the level of Seratonin to go down canceling out the effect of the SSRI. Then when the SSRI is taken away the Seratonin that is lost makes the situation even worse. Also, I have heard that SSRI can limit brain function in the long run.

My second year in college I started somking on the front porch of my apartment. My neighbor also smoked. We got to know each other, turned out he was a drug dealer. We continued to hang out, one of the guys that he sold to became a good friend of mine and I began hanging out with him too. His roommate became my wife. Strange, if it weren't for bad habits the best thing that ever happened to me never would of happened.

I wouldn't change a thing. Even the mistakes I am making now I know will either turn out for the better, or I will just drop them and walk away.

Nothing like that ever happened for me, Shi. You just heard me, my life is genuinely pathetic and I'm usually pretty chipper, I'm just occasionally depressed because I'm lonely, and I attribute that at least partially to the autism thing.

Maybe it eventually causes some cognitive downgrade, but I haven't noticed that either. In Sava's case I'd say the more important thing would be to stop playing stupid crap like GTA and rap, which he's evidently been doing recently to judge by his avatar and sig. Immersing yourself in wannabe-street-thug culture and then complaining that life feels empty and meaningless is like going to a Times Square brothel and then complaining when you catch the clap. Duh!
