We have a hybrid... a 2004 Toyota Prius. The thing is awesome. It gets about 45 MPG on average, has a touch screen computer in the dash, a 6 disc changer, and it's as roomy as our Toyota Camry.

I am sorry, but it's fugly. I can't stand the thing. I would buy it if it looked like a regular car, or a sports car, but it reminds me of fiat multipla for some reason.

Pretty good I'd say. The brakes take a little getting used to though. They feel different because the brakes charge the battery... or rather, power the electric motor that charges the battery. Or something. I wasn't paying attention when the dealer was explaining how it worked.

Is it auto, or "robotic" or something? I remember it had something weird about it... not bad, just weird.... about the way it operated...

I don't know about that. I'll have to do some research on it. AFAIK, it's a regular automatic transmission.

We recently (last month) got my wife a brand new civic ex 4dr. Were seriously looking at the hybrid, but just couldn't justify the extra price/money saved over the long run. Even with the tax break (ever diminishing) it would take many many years for us to equalize the difference in gas payments.

Stick to biology.

The new trains they got in Calgary do the same thing...they get energy back while breaking. The whole train grid in Calgary is powered by wind-power too, BTW.

ah, but im in san diego, where you can have a highway full of cars, all doing 130+ you get that in LA too on occasion, but usually not since there are lots of junctions and offramps.

What's a "good" driver, anyway? It's not like we participate in some sort of race or endurance test... the only way to measure is how much do endanger or trouble all other traffic.

And your point? So do I...

20-30mpg is just not an impressive fuel economy...either you aren't very efficient in your style of driving (too heavy on the gas, automatic) or your car is a fuelguzzler...mine does about 40mpg...

Hell, the 1974 VW I owned when I was 16 got 30 mpg and the 1978 VW Rabbit diesel my parents gave me after I crashed the Bug got 50 mpg. Currently I own two cars a 1995 Ford Probe 2.5L which gets around 25 mpg mixed driving and a 1998 Toyota Camery V6 which get about the same.

I'd love to sell them both and get a Honda S2000 or a BMW Z4 but I don't think that will happen anytime soon.

The brakes drive a flywheel that generates electricity to charge the battery. Or something similar. Some (maybe most) normal cars store braking energy in a flywheel too, or a pneumatic system. Saves energy.

The general concept is that a motor and a generator are the same thing, the only difference is which end is the input and which the output.
