At least 4 dead in Tel Aviv bombing
Suicide bomber detonates charge at entrance to beachfront night club, close to 50 people injured, including 3 Americans. Security officials estimate Hizbullah involved in attack
BY Avi Cohen
TEL AVIV - At least four people died and more than 50 were injured after a suicide bomber detonated himself at the entrance to a club near the Tel Aviv beach promenade Friday night.
One of the bodies recovered at the scene may be that of the suicide bomber, the police said.
The explosion took place at the Stage nightclub on the corner of Herbert Samuel and Jonah the Prophet Streets around 11:30 p.m.
Rescue forces were promptly dispatched to the scene and began treating the wounded.
The injured are suffering from blast wounds typical for a terror attack, Ichilov Hospital Deputy Director Avi Asner said.
"There are no children among them, the youngest ones are in their 20s, but some older people were injured" he said.
The explosive charge contained shrapnel that caused serious injuries, another hospital official said.
At least 3 Americans injured
Among the injured was Arieh Sasson, a 17-year-old New Yorker in Israel on a two-month trip.
"I was at a store near the scene of the blast. There was a lot of blood," he said. Two more Americans were also taken to hospital for treatment.

Bomber likely came from West Bank
Security officials estimate the bomber came to Tel Aviv from the West Bank, possibly from the town of Tul Karem.
Meanwhile, the police have declared a high terror alert across the country and dispatched a helicopter in an effort to locate the second suspect.
The Islamic Jihad and the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades initially claimed responsibility for the attack, but later denied any connection. Senior Palestinian Authority officials condemned the bombing and said they accept the later denials.
A Hamas spokesperson said his group is still committed to maintaining the current calm.
A source at the Palestinian Authority said it would "not be silent" about the shattering of the truce and would pursue whoever planned the attack and "inflict the required punishment".
Despite denials, members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades and Islamic Jihad reportedly fired in the air in celebration after hearing of the attack.
Mofaz says Israel will take necessary action
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz has already spoken with Prime Minister Ariel Sharon and is set to hold a special situation assessment with top security officials Saturday.
Mofaz said Israel regards the terror attack in Tel Aviv very seriously and will take the necessary measures to protect its citizens.
Minister of Internal Security Gideon Ezra said the bombing in Tel Aviv would not affect the Gaza disengagement plan.
He said Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas had stationed police forces in Gaza but he had not assumed responsibility for the West Bank. If the attacks continue, he said, Israel would not continue easing restrictions on the Palestinians and would be forced to return to targeted killings.

Is Hizbullah behind attack?
Security officials estimate Lebanese terror group involved in Tel Aviv attack, an assessment shared by Palestinian Authority officials
By Hanan Greenberg and Ali Waked
TEL AVIV - Hizbullah terrorists may have been involved in carrying out the suicide bombing in Tel Aviv Friday, Israeli and Palestinian officials say.
A Hizbullah source in Beirut, however, denied his group was connected to the attack, which claimed the lives of at least four people.
Security officials estimate that several terror groups may have been involved in perpetrating the attack. Earlier, both the Islamic Jihad and the Fatah's al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades claimed responsibility for the bombing.
Meanwhile, Fatah and Islamic Jihad members fired shots in the air in celebration following the attack.
Officials say they are convinced the terrorist came from the northern West Bank and estimated the bomber came from the town of Tul Karem. The investigation, however, is in early stages and details are still scant.
Recently, security officials warned of the growing Hizbullah involvement in attempts to carry out attacks in Israel. The group reportedly offered large sums of money to terrorists willing to target Israel.
The attack took place as Israel was in the process of lifting restrictions on the Palestinians and allowing freer passage through the West Bank. Security officials will be checking whether the relaxed security procedures helped terrorists carry out the attack.
'Foreign hands were involved'
The Palestinian Authority was quick to condemn the bombing and said the Palestinian government should not be held responsible.
There is no room for sanctions against the Authority or freezing contacts between the two sides, spokesman Saeb Erekat said.
Palestinian sources said the Islamic Jihad or any other Palestinian group have no interest in carrying out such an attack at this time.
"Foreign hands were involved in the attack," a PA source told Ynet.
Other senior Palestinian officials told Ynet they tend to agree with Israeli estimates regarding Hizbullah involvement in the bombing.
Meanwhile, a senior Palestinian security official told Ynet that an investigation into the attack has already been launched.
"The security apparatuses…would act to detain any Palestinian element involved in the attack, if it turns out Palestinians were indeed behind it," he said.

Uh, yeah. Because Arafat wouldn't have taken any action.
Well, except for funding some of the terrorists.

Palestinian security officials also implicated Hezbollah.
A Hezbollah official in Beirut denied involvement. "As far as we are concerned, there is no need to respond to such lies that we have become used to it," the official said. |

No matter who did it,
if this bombing damages the peace process,
it will be a success for those who planned and ordered it.
So we better hope, that both, the palestinian as well as the israeli government do the right thing,
to preserve the peace process.

Well, they usually, but not always, claim responsibility. But then, it's usually benefited them to do so (in terms of gaining a reputation/morale), and if they're mostly interested in simply derailing the peace process (while avoiding any immediate wrath from Israel or the PA), it wouldn't be in their interest to do so now.
Hezbollah TV were the ones who reported Islamic Jihad's claim of credit, and since Hezbollah is a likely suspect, it does make that claim more suspect. Of course, one of those pointing the fingers at Hezbollah is Al-aqsa, but they're not the only ones doing so.

Isn;t it convinient for both the Israelis and Palestinians to blame Hezbullah?
If the sun did not go up tommorrow, the first statement from the Israeli government would blame it on hezbollah, and Iran, and if it is Hezbollah, the PA can state that, hey, it wasn;t one of theirs, so get of our backs somewhat...
So the claim is that Hezbollah just called this guy and said, hey, go bomb..hmmm, who made the bomb? Who transported him? A one man suicide cell? That's new.

No, they said, "hey, Al Aqsa cell in wherever, here's 20,000$, blow something up".

For the Palestinians, probably, but that doesn't mean it need be false. For Israel, not so much. If Hamas or IJ are behind it, it puts more pressure on Abbas to actually deal with the groups, which is certainly in their interests.

I am sure Foreign Ministry spokemen would honestly believe Hezbollah must have been involved, somehow, if the sun did not come up. After all, they are THE great enemy right now. |
The most recent claim from "military sources" is that the order came from Islamic Jihad headquarters in Damascus, not from the Hizballah.
