Software Piracy - Online Survey Got spare money?

Hi

I'm writing a 10 - 12 page report for a college class. The topic of that report is 'Software Piracy'. For that report I am doing an online survey to get some people's opinions and habits.

Here's the link to that survey:

Link removed

I would appreciate all responses to my survey.

Thanks
Scott

Edit: Survey done. Thank you all.

I'll take it. I have a question, is it piracey if you "borrow" your brother's copy of a game and play it? Or borrow "backups" from your brother?

At least I kept it in the family. .

All of your reponses are being sent directly to Bill Gates for inspection. Get ready for the Microsoft police to come knocking at your door.

Thanks for all the responses! I just need 28 more before my allowed limit is filled.

If any of you want the raw results, I can e-mail them to you or post them here.

I just finished mine, so you need 27 more

I forgot to do it earlier.

I have downloaded programs from the internet, but I have never played them . I don't know why I bother. I prefer buying software. But sometimes there are just too many games and not enough money to go around.

Maybe I should have included 'downloading addiction' as a possible reason for software piracy.

Yep, IMHO there is a 'just because it's free' factor.

The survey is deficient. The only time I ever pirated software was in the 1980s when everyone in my country who had the same computers did. The reason was that you couldn't actually find the damn programs to buy as no-one supplied them.

Lack of supply was the problem, not morality or the cost of software.

I haven't had an illegitimate piece of software since then IIRC. Having said that I have made backups of my stuff and if the man wants to call that illegal he can stick it where the sun don't shine.

A lousy one...

..I guess one who can afford the small amount of software he buys. If I can't afford something I really want, there is usually a free version available (like the GIMP).

Agathon: Thanks for your response. I didn't think of lack of supply as a possibility. I don't think it's ever been a real issue here.

Sava: It looks like Agathon's in the majority as far as thinking it's OK to make unauthorized back-ups. I guess that makes the majority commies!

Isn't there something in the law that says that you're allowed to make backups (for own use) ?

It's kind of difficult when you have CD copy protection. You need cracks in those cases, which are illegal.

The problem with copy protection is that it doesn't stop pirates, but just annoys the hell out of regular customers.

The worst scheme ever was Lenslok. Anyone remember that?

Oh Xorbon. I guess that supply isn't a big deal any more, but it certainly was 25 years ago when I got my first home computer.
