What's wrong with paganism, as a whole?

And "void" is fine if a) it's honest and b) it allows us to fill it with ourselves.

Good to hear, because my negative view of Christianity comes in large part from Methodists and Baptists. I'd venture to guess that's the case (mainstream, "legitimate" denominations, that is, not those two specifically) more often than someone forming a negative view of Christianity solely because of Mormons or Jehovah's Witnesses.

Edit: crap, that's what I get for skimming the thread.

I am an athiest because there is NO evidence for any kind of higher power. I am annoyed when people like creationists try to resort to a "God in the gaps" argument whenever our knowlege of a scientific topic is poor. (*cough* intelligent design *cough*)

This thread is a hot contender for the title of "Lamest thread ever!". It's got discourse on what constitutes true Christianity. It's got Asher and Agathon, coupled with Steve Jobs references. It's got Fez. It's got over-confident atheists stridently asserting that only they have The Way And The Truth. It's got Fez.

Notice the lack of participants from a pagan perspective? We've got too much taste.

For the record, I'm more agnostic than atheist. I don't believe one can effectively say "there is no god" any more than one can say, "there is a god".

But then again, one doesn't need to be an atheist to know that human religions are flawed and the product OF humans. That's why I laugh at Christians, Jews, and Muslims. They sit and pray to something that was fabricated over a thousand years ago.

My grandmother, who ironically was a devout Christian, told me, "you have a brain to use it, lose it, or abuse it."

I choose to use the brain that may or may not have been given to me by a God. By putting faith in unproven conjecture and mythology, Christians are not using their brains. And by rejecting science and other facts that disprove many parts of their religion, they are abusing their mind by believing in something that is obviously false.

Of course you are, but that's not the point.

I'm a pagan. I celebrate life and the forces of life as they manifest themselves about me. What is the part that requires proof? The fact that there is life manifesting itself about me, or the fact that I celebrate it?

I assumed it was the latter, because the former would be totally absurd.

Perhaps, though yes, I'll take the honesty of atheism/agnosicism over the delusions of religion any day .

Laz is right about the pagans, and I am certainly far more sympathetic to transcendental philosophies than I am to organised religions in the monotheistic mold. I'm a little concerned the consensus image of paganism is of sadists in the wood, sacrificing virgins between chanting Satanic incantations and downloading Cradle of Filth albums . Paganism as an "ism" is way more diverse and historical than anything that calls itself "Christian".

and yes I'm a nature freak. I don't really worship nature, but I do feel a strong connection to it. I do have native american blood in me after all. but worshipping nature seems a bit silly. respecting it is not.

How so? For all I know, you're just a spambot in a sterile lab.

Personally, I've always felt that the "celebrating life" brand of paganism to suffer from the same problem as LaVeyan Satanism; it combines all the bad points of a "normal" religion (big daddy God in the sky) religion with all the bad ones of atheism, without any of the good points of either. Tastes clearly differ.

And besides, not all atheists are arrogant. Some can lend some credibility to some of their claims.

I should think your pwnage is very much on topic . If God cannot be shown in rational terms, do you concur that efforts to do so are futile and that he does not exist, as we use the term?

quote:

I generally find it's the theists that are arrogant and generally have this ability to close their ears as soon as they hear something that they don't want to hear regarding the existence of god or any of their beliefs. I, for one, am more than prepared to listen because I am secure in the strength of the atheist argument.

But your brand of Christianity isn't that old. In the 19th Century, a Scottsman came up with a bunch of new ideas which aren't in the Bible, and yet you adhere to them. Dispensationalism isn't even 200 years old. It most certainly isn't true Chistianity.
