I am not overly familiar with the views of the British public on this issue. But it might not be as stupid a position to take as some of you say. The thing is about the abortion issue is there is quite a number of people who will vote solely on this issue(the pro-life party there currently might not get as many votes right now, but that could be because it is not a major party that is seen as having a credible chance of winning). There tend to be not as many people on the pro-choice side that are willing to vote solely on the abortion issue, and those that are tend to be left-wing on most other issues as well and so wouldn't consider voting for the conservatives anyway. On the other hand, many of those willing to swing on the abortion issue have leftist economic views and without the abortion issue might vote for the left instead.

Moreover, at least in the USA while most people don't want to see all abortion outlawed, they are uncomftorable with the idea of abortion on demand and in favor of some restrictions. I am not sure how different that is in the UK.

Are you aware that we do not currently have abortion on demand in the UK? I read Howard's piece as indicating that, while reducing the limit by 4 weeks, he'll be making it on-demand.

True- doctors will generally accept any old excuse to do them, but is this really a victory for pro-lifers, or a typically sneaky Tory act of making the "right" noises while steering well clear of alienating the centre by actually changing anything?

Its not the specific policy proposal that has made me so angry. Its the idea of morality politics - a public discourse where individuals attempt to impose their morality on the majority through the ballot box.

Elections should be about real issues. I dont care whether you cast your vote for the party that you feel would be best for everyone in the country or vote for who you think would be best for you personally as long as you are voting on proper policy. Its a slippery slope once parties attempt to harness morality for short term electoral gain, warping the real point of elections in the process. People fought and died to allow people to vote to improve the country and safeguard their freedoms - NOT to allow a parties to flirt with moral fascism.

Lets put some perspective, the Official Monster Raving Looney Party registered nearly twice the number of votes per constituency as the Pro-Life Alliance at the last General Election.

Thats is like saying all molecular biologists are creationists just because of Behe. every field has it's cooks and nuts. Every non-nut who works on the subject will tell you there is no difference in the average of the INHEIRETED portion of inteligence between ethinic group or sex.



UR, Yes it is a real science. Unless you think Biology is not real science just because it uses concepts instead of mathamatical laws.
