Believe me IW, there aren't enough hours in the day to get everything sorted that I need to...if I ever (heaven forbid) run out of tasks at work I'd quickly find more to do. To go running to my supervisor asking for work would look a bit silly at my relative level of seniority

PH it doesn't cost anything to go to the beach, take a hike, or walk in a park.

hmmm well a million pounds would be nice but would likely not be enough for a lifetime if you planned to travel a lot ( and particularly if you gave some to family and friends)

We figured that a million now would be enough for mrs Flub to quit work or go even more part time but I would have to continue to work ( but wouldn't have to seek to be a top performer)-- Our firm allows people to choose a different level of expected performance if you accept a lower pay

Not if you were to give any away, but to travel it would. Easily. If you start travelling at 25 or something, then even if you only travel until you're 80, you have something like Ģ18k a year. Ok, you wont be doing long-haul flights very often, but thats plenty to get by on if you're going to eschew materialism and capitalism (and probably reproduction) completely. Write a book of your travels or be a free-lance photographer to make up any deficit. Do some volunteer work in various places. Sounds like a good living to me.

You'd have to split it over quite a few accounts to get a decent interest rate.

Setting goals is a good start but make sure the goals u set are obtainable, not ones that are unrealistic. I will say dont take a job that pays less then what you are recieving from unemployment. That woud be a watse of your time.

Mcdonalds probably wouldn't take him into their management training given his somewhat scattered background--

Does anyone know what a Mcdonalds manager (top one in the store plus the next underling ) would make. A friend of mine was in their training program and indicated that decent coin was a vailable if you stuck with it. ( He actually flunked out and ended up in the military )

I disagree. No job where you EARN your own way is a waste of time. I would agree that it doesn't make much financial sense in the short run but given his long unemployment, he's pretty much at the point where he needs to get into any job just to improve his chances at a decent job.

This type of example does show how unemployment/welfare benefits may be demotivating to some people. I'm betting if those benefits were cut, a job would be found post-haste

Ya there were 5 guys sharing an apartment . Four were in university and this guy was in Burger College. He took it so serious as well with his big binder that was so secret (plus he was a PIA when he had to go in on the early shift and wanted silence from like 8pm) . . When he flunked, he moved out pretty quick . . .

I could actually see how a manager at McD's has to know a lot of stuff . . . Apparently he was their type of candidate. He was told they look for high school graduates with middle-decent marks and no plans for university.

I'm not sure why you think it's parasitic. It's work that benefits society. In the case of investment banking it serves people who make investments, but it's still a valuable service.

Methinks you're working in the financial sector trying to defend your existence. My work is vital for ensuring the safety of pharmaceutical products. Teaching, manufacturing, medicine, agriculture...they all add something to society, they increase the worth of society or produce necessities. Now how does exploiting the nature of the financial system contribute to society - it just increases it's volatility...

Yeah, but at this point I think I will have to bite the sour apple. Any job would be nice, as long as Iīm getting paid. Hopefully this will be a stepping stone to a better job later. I talked to a friend who works at the post office, he works 40 hours a week and he makes as much money as I make just sitting on my ass.

Exploiting in the sense that you are using it simply means to work for pay. Accountants for example do work for pay. They get paid because the service they provide is valuable to the people who pay them. In the same sense teaching exploits the education system because you are recieveing pay for your work. Exploitaion in this way is not parasitic.

As far as volatility is concerned I don't really know what you mean by that.

Well I am not so much referring to accountants although the point still applies to a lesser extent. I am not referring to the individuals who work though, I am referring to the nature of the sector they work in. The teaching profession is not parasitic because it educates children, our future. The medical profession brings people back to health, and as well as this obvious benefit is a great boon to productivity.

The point is, what does the stockbroker or the investment banker bring to our society that is valuable? The sector is an artifact of the capitalist system, important for it to function (to an extent) but isn't a valuable occupation for society in itself. And as they seem to make wealth off of other peoples work by manipulation of numbers basically, it is parasitic.

As far as volatility is concerned I don't really know what you mean by that. [/QUOTE]

Volatile...look at the nature of the market, busts and booms and can be affected by the whim of a few...that is volatility.
