Yeah, I guess I should cut him some slack. He´s not a bad person, really. Just extremly annoying these days, but that´s probably because all the alcohol has pickled his brain

And I have very few jobs I feel are actually beneath me. Working at McD or BK is two, but they wouldn´t want to hire me anyway so... Telemarketing and harassing people on the streets, trying to sell stuff is two other. And I have done both, so I know what I´m talking about. It was very demeaning...

Other than that I think I can get reasonly comfortable almost anywhere.

The teaching profession is not parasitic because it educates children, our future. The medical profession brings people back to health, and as well as this obvious benefit is a great boon to productivity.

The point is, what does the stockbroker or the investment banker bring to our society that is valuable?

Stockbrockers and investment bankers, as well as other workers in the financial sector perform services which are valuable to people. Is the taxicab driver a parasite, because he gives people rides when they could otherwise walk? Is the cashier a parasite who takes people's money and hands out tickets? Of course not becuase they provide a benefit to people with the work that they perform. True teachers and medical professionals provide a lasting benefit, but it's still just a benefit, not better no worse than other workers.

That being said workers in the financial sector do improve productivity, especially accountants. They provide information to govt, managers, investors, and even employees about the organization that they work for that allows those people to make better decisions which improves productivity and overall value as much as any other job.
quote:

The sector is an artifact of the capitalist system, important for it to function (to an extent) but isn't a valuable occupation for society in itself. And as they seem to make wealth off of other peoples work by manipulation of numbers basically, it is parasitic.

Every job is important to keep the capitalist system functioning. I don't care what job you do, the system depends on it.
quote:

And as they seem to make wealth off of other peoples work by manipulation of numbers basically, it is parasitic.

Ummm.... No they don't. They make money from their own work. A capitalist makes money from other people's work. That is parasitic. Why do you think working in the financial system is the same thing. It's not about manipulating numbers. That is a select few criminals who do that. Honest accountants provide usefull honest information.
quote:

"As far as volatility is concerned I don't really know what you mean by that."

Volatile...look at the nature of the market, busts and booms and can be affected by the whim of a few...that is volatility.

Ok. Well there are some stockbrockers who cause that, but you can't label all financial sector workers parasites just because some of them are.

So what do investment bankers and stockbrokers do that is not an inherent part of a capitalist system and that is so productive? I certainly don't feel they can explain what their output is to me is remotely obvious or useful.

And to those you can add marketing or advertising...completely parasitic too.

But I don´t know about about the child thing. I don´t think children should be used as a means of self fullfillment. If you procreate you should want it, you should want all the hassle that it is raising a child. I don´t want that, I have no wish to procreate and I don´t want the responsibility that a child is. Maybe later, but not now. EDIT: Besides, I don´t want to **** up their childhood as my dad ****ed up mine. He is a whining alcoholic that never wanted kids.

Ugh, well, I guess what really matters is whether you like children.

In that case, my advice to you is to:

a) volunteer to working with children for a short while.
b) don't be a paedophile.

Basically they're knowledge workers. People need to utilize their knowledge and they pay for it. They're very important to the modern economy. Maybe one day they won't be needed, but for now they are.

Banks actually do something valuable. They get capital into the hands of people who can best use it or at least into the hands of people who claim they will use it productively.

Heh I get sick when I cut my self in the finger or something, makes want to faint. It´s amazing I managed to stay conscious when I smashed up my elbow and arm a couple of months back. But I guess it´s different if you treat people who are injured, you´re not feeling the pain (ooh, the pain) for a start

What Oerdin said. You might be able to find someone to borrow your money, but will you be repaid? Banks aren't just middlemen, because they provide a valuable service.

Banks themselves do have a use. Hate the buggers but it'd be difficult to function without them...I can see their utility. But juggling with stocks and shares, well the underlying nature of it is useless. Just like advertising

Stock also serves a usefull purpose. Sometimes it's the best or only way to raise capital. I don't like capitalism either comrade, but it's what we got for now. We have to work with it, and working in the financial sector is just as important as other jobs.
