The top I've done is about 120mph, majorly assisted by a lovely steep incline of the M20, near Maidstone.

If I could be guaranteed not to have traffic on the roads, there are some lovely parts of the A21 between Sevenoaks and Hastings that I would love to sprint along.

The fastest I've gone in a car is only about 120 because that's where my car tops out.

I did it when I was driving up old highway 395 on the east side of the Sierra Nevada mountains not far from Death Valley. In the right time of year you are the only car for miles and miles plus the place is so flat you'd see anyone coming.

yep, I've driven it. Though there was decent traffic when I was on it.

My top speed was on I-15 coming back to Las Vegas from Mesquite. It was in a company vehicle. I haven't had the balls to get my dodge ram up that high. That one may go up to 120 mph. The ford ranger I was in tops out at around 100 mph, I could feel the governor kicking in.

The cost of fuel is a big one too...at that kind of speed they absolutely drink petrol although if I could get up to Hull all the way at that speed it would take me barely over 1 1/2 hours...

The other time I topped out my car was coing home from a camping Trip with friends near Pisgah Crater in the Mojave desert. It was fun we crawled around inside the lava tubes, hiked out on the old lava flows plus we used card board to "sand sled" down some really big sand dunes. Any way on the way back the main highway was closed due to snow and no traffic was let through. Passes to the east and west were losed but we were in a low area right in the middle (where there was no snow).

Any way a park ranger told us about an old stretch of Route 66 which lead out of the desert which the Highway patrol hadn't closed. So we took Route 66 and were the only car on it sine the other freeways were closed. Since there was no snow and I figured the cops were busy else where I floored until we got back to civilization.

242 kmh (~150mph)
While testdriving my Fathers new Car, there are several Security Automatics though, which help to handle the Car at such a Speed.
Having an experienced Driver next to you does too
HUD is also a really nice Feature The Second spent looking at the Tacho(Speedometer) equal 67 meters driven.

My own Car only manages 189 kmh (117mph), but at this Wheater Condition + Winter Tires I take my Time.

Those who envy the Autobahn should be aware that of course Jams and Construction Sites are to be reckoned with and should remember: the Survivours of HighSpeed Autobahn Crashes are scare

In the state of Illinois, you have to get regular auto emmissions testing done... but only every few years.

Well over here you have an MOT every year for a car over 3 years old...they check all the important bits of the car: brakes, tyres, etc...and then they test emissions...my car had it's MOT done last week, no problems apart from a dead headlamp bulb...not too expensive fortunately

Suffering from ads?

I have done just over 100mph before sustained, I have done that speed for large proportions of the M62...late at night mind you without a car on the road...hell that 116mph was done in my present car by not realising just how much more powerful it was than my last car. Slowed down when I realised the speed I was going. That was on the M62 for part of the Leeds-Hull stretch too.

135-140 mph in a '72 Mercedes Benz 280 SE 4.5 liter fuel injected double overhead cam V-8 (about 300 CI I guess) on a straight and long stretch of road early in the morning heading north from Crater Lake, Oregon. My dad was driving and my mom was freaking out as I sat in the back telling my dad to keep the pedal to the metal. She finally yelled out how a deer could walk out onto the road - the road was cut through a thick forest with our visibility limited to the road itself. The image of us smacking a deer at that speed and the ensuing jig-saw puzzle of body parts and twisted metal sprawled out over a quarter mile of road and trees convinced my dad to start slowing down... Man that was a great car!

The fastest I drove was 115 mph across the southern bridge over San Francisco Bay. I was in a '72 Gran Torino with a 302 CI motor that already had over 110,000 miles on it. That was quite amazing since it was a 4 door and the 302 was not enough motor for such a heavy car, but it got up to speed and rolled thanks to the gearing ratio.

I drove a 70s era Mustang on I80 and buried the speedometer under the dash board. The speedometer only went up to 90MPH, so I have no idea how fast that was. I have gone 55mph in reverse though
