Autobahn- what's the fastest you have driven? Suffering from ads?

Okay so I'm watching this program on the history channel (I'm addicted to this channel). And of course this program is on the autobahn.

Is it true that a drivers license in Germany costs that much? this program kind of makes me want to go to germany to drive on the autobahn. but it'd probably be cheaper to rent out a racetrack and drive fast on that . I don't think I could ever get comfortable passing people at that speed. Because in the U.S., drivers are stupid, and will pull in front of you when you are travelling 80 mph, and they are going 50 mph. U.S. drivers suck.

who has driven on this thing? I can't see being able to drive that fast? Don't you have traffic. If you have ever seen the traffic on I-95 or I-15 between LA and Las Vegas, you can see why we can't have such a thing in the U.S.

As an added bonus to this thread, feel free to post the fastest you have ever driven (not rode in- because I don't want to hear crap about high speed trains). I'm talking about driving the car yourselves. It doesn't have to be on the autobahn, it can be any road. 100 mph is my highest speed. And this was limited by a speed limiting governor. I couldn't go faster if I tried. If I did the conversion correctly that is 160.9 KM/hr

I would make this a poll, but I'm lazy and don't want to figure out the KPH conversions.

use this link for conversions:

If cars can drive faster they are on the roads for less time so there are fewer cars.

Autobahns are quite packed, and there are plenty of areas where speed is actually limited. The legend is all good, but the reality is far less glamour

yeah now it's the second half of the progam, they show all the traffic jams. And they say half of the road has speed limits. But I would love to go to the places away from cities in a high performance car.

Got spare money?

Probably about 180 km/h (110-120 mph?), I don't really keep track of that sort of thing. Faster than that is just irresponsible, plus I doubt any of the cars I've ever driven in could handle it. That was either in Germany or in southwest France, where the roads tend to be very empty whenever I'm there (usually on the hottest part of the day in mid-summer).

That was a while ago though, I haven't driven a car in years. Public transport and airplanes are just sooo much more comfortable and efficient time-wise...

I did 165 km/h (roughly 100 mph?) in my parents Volvo station vagon when I was young and stupid. I think that was the top speed, I would´ve tried to gone faster but the police stopped that. There was a 90 km/h speed limit, so they took my drivers license and fined me 1000 kr (~130 $)

118Mph or around 190 km/h Opel Vectra last fall. Had a nice open section of road on a downhill. Don't think the car could get any faster.

Most of the time, I was able to average around 160 km/h, except around Munich

110 mph on a honda 750f with no faring. It was like hanging on to a rocket. About the same speed on the autobahn heading toward Hamburg coming back from Italy. It felt a lot slower in the Saab though.

Exactly 200km/h. In clear weather, in silent fast lane with good visibility. Just to test if the car would go the magical 200km/h or not. Well it did. NEver had to test it out again after that.

~240km/h (150mph) in a Volvo S80, but I don't like travelling at that speed for long, it sucks way too much fuel and the control of the car is not that good as well.
It's a thrill for sure though!

Normally I'd cruise around 130-150km/h but here in spain I am fine with 120 (though occassionally I go slightly faster and I constantly ignore the 100s - as everyone else).

spoiler(highlight to read):
You can calculate how many mph that are by searching google with "xxx km/h in mph"

I think I hit about 165 kph on a Vancouver highway when I was 17. I was also in a car with four other people (yes, five total) on another Vancouver highway and we hit 215kph. It was crazy - the speed limit was 100, and when we passed someone it was like they were standing still.

Which, if you were going the speed limit, would be the equivilant of driving past someone standing still.

220 km/h according to my speedometer, but they usually lie (show about 10% more), so it comes down to about 195 to 200 km/h. The autobahn Nürnberg-Bamberg, which I drive the most time on, is not so packed, does not have a speed limit and often allows for some nice speeding. My average speed on it is about 180 km/h (on speedometer).

Most cars in Germany are hard-capped at about 250 km/h, so you won't see much people driving faster than that.

Last time I was in Hungary, my dad opened up the rental car while my mom was sleeping in the back. I think we were in a BMW, I forget what he got it up to, but it was cool.

A few months ago, my day job (autoparts store) rented a new Dodge Ram with a hemi in it for deliveries. I was going to another store and got it onto the highway, and I made it over 100 mph briefly. Maybe 105 or so. It was so effortless too. Took just a few seconds to get er up there. And on crowded DC highways too. Mmmm, a hemi....

Acutally there are quite some routes which allow more than 130 kph. More than half of the route from my parents' to my place (~330 km) is not limited. I usually end up driving ~190 kph.

My fastest was 215 kph (with my parents' car).

I did 180 kph but decided not to go any faster than that.

It was about midnight on the 407etr, which was essentially abandonded except me and this kid in his Civic who basically drove right beside me and challenged me.

His civic topped out at about 170 so I didn't feel the need to go faster than 180...

Mine is electronically limited at 190 anyway.
