Put an end to popups!

I think she would be quite content to face a majority in Westminster or Ottowa if backed by a majority of the people outside Westminster or Ottawa.

I like to think so, and theoretically you are right.

It would come down to the people and the moment, like Hindenbrug.

Very true.

The difference is, though, that the people had chosen Hindenburg and Hindenburg was in a lost situation. If he didn't accept there would be no Reichstag and Germany would fall into anarchy, if he did then he'd have Hitler. The latter is, unfortunately, preferable, given the time and lack of foresight.

The Queen, on the other hand, is not popularly elected, and relies on the backing of the people to stay in (funnily enough). She has to listen to the people or there will be anarchy, and again, having a controlled government, albeit by a revolution of sorts, is again preferable to anarchy.

Where such a situation would go after that is anyone's guess.

Get rid of all these annoying royal people, I hate them. They have ruined many days in my life, specially some day when they came walking just outside where I lived (I lived there that day), which caused a lot of annoying people to fill the road up so it was impossible to get anywhere

And the days after was also annoying because on the house just a few meters from where I lived they had some huge poster saying that the city I live in was proud that they came by???

I can't piss THAT high

I was close throwing something at it (something rotten). One day I decided to finally do it, then I noticed they had just taken it down a few days earlier
There's a store that has a picture of some royal people (I believe it's the same people that came to this town last summer... it was posted in their windows the day after IIRC) and since then I haven't shopped by them... ok, I've never shopped by them earlier, but that was just because I didn't need what they have, in the future I might 'need' it, but it wont be from them I'm going to buy it
If they only had that picture for a few days I would probably have forgotten about it, but it's almost a year and they still have the picture, so there's no way I can forgive them for it

Well apart from them being possible imposters on the throne of britain(the real monarch is living in australia as a sheep farmer), and that they are of german and greek descent; i like having them around - they provide an emergency stop-gap if ever the political situation gets out of control.

In theory anyway, even if much of the power is dilluted. The armed forces are in alligence with the crown, and the hundreds of years of tradition that goes with the monarchy and is tied in with the british way of life(whatever that may be) is there to guarentee its continuation in any nasty situation.

something like that. So i see the monarchy as a healthy, vital part of our democratic system in the uk, ironicaly.

monarchy in the 21st century

oh and yes they are a little bit silly, but if you had their genes you'd be silly too

what have royalty done to ADG? or maybe haven't done?
Is it just that they cost quite a bit to maintain? Don't you think their outdated form of royal strangeness is worth paying something for?

regular politicians are just not eccentric enough imho(and probably cost us about the same?).

My point is Monarchy is not about bloodlines per se (it is as a useful way of becoming a claimaint), its about who can wrestle the crown off of the other challengers and the politics of the day. The events of 1066 or the War of the Roses highlight my point.

Nope, I don't think they're worth anything. Why should I pay lots of money to make a few people live in abselute luxuriness to make them "represent" our country? I don't like how they represent us, from my point of view they're putting a negative image on this place. I'm sure that I would have a much more positive on the UK too, if they kicked out all their royal people

I want to be able to vote for who I want to represent Denmark, I hate when people are born to that position. That Bush-guy is the opposite of me, but I have more respect for him than royal people because he was at least elected...

fair points that i've bolded, and i can see why you feel this way. My experience(or knowledge) of the Danish royal family is pretty sketchy(Hamlet is about as current as it gets!) so my remarks are coloured by the ones we have here in the uk and what they get upto.

I agree with you on the first point, i tend to picture my monarchs in a very old fashioned way, kind of leading the army into war etc and being more useful and pro-active, its that history of the monarchy that gives this lot my sometimes wavering support now. If they got back to getting their hands dirty(and not in a tabloid newspaper sense!) in the world more, then i wouldn't waver.

The second bolded point is a personel thing and maybe in our countries(and others with monarchs), maybe it would be best if we could choose to give the royal family any of our money in taxes? So those that want them pay for them? would seem a fairer way of doing things, but maybe very complicated in working out the reimbursments that the royal family bring to a nation?

Well yes, but all that stuff is part of the fun(positive) of having a royal family imho. And if you bump into him could you try to persuade our real king in exile to get back over here and kick the germans out of buckingham palace please He seemed like a really alright bloke, it would be great to see him as king

Our Queen consistantly has >90% popular support in "polls", and I imagine that was also the case for her father and his father before him. And with the Crown Prince having been voted Dane of the Year 5 or 6 times already, it would seem that at least the Danes would answer the thread question with a clear and emphatic No!

Aside from Adagio of course, who's always been a little strange.

Get a bigger avatar today!

You get long term consistency in the position of head of state, thereby vastly strengthening the position in terms of national identification. Plus the ability in most cases for the ascendant to have ample time to prepare for asuming the position, taking with him impressions and advice from the previous head of state.

You get a head of state for all of the population, not just the ones having voted for him/her in the last election.

And you get a bit of pomp and circumstance surrounding official affairs, such as state visits, jubilees, weddings etc., which is not to be laughed at, as most people love it dearly.

Got spare money?

The question is, how much of the history and culture is based upon the history of a monarch(s).

The history of Britian wouldn't be half as interesting if it were a republic since 1066... see Cromwell.
