Some Things Ive Never Understood About Star Trek Deep Space Nine Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

First of let me clarify that it is the worst Star Trek series in existance. Excluding Enterprise (the newest one) as Ive never seen it.

1. Why do they have a captain in charge of the station instead of an Admiral or some other higher ranking person?

2. Why do they allow a Bjorin (?) to hold such an important position?

3. Why do they have the same senior officers as Picard's Enterprise? What happend to Picard, does DSN take place before he takes control of the Enterprise?

edit: and why do they allow a captain who is clearly mentaly il have command (he believes he was born the sun of a wormhole alien or some such thing iirc)

DS9 is the best. Voyager is the worst. Watch a little more and you'll understand. DS9 is really the only ST show where they had big kickass battles amonng other things.

Why would an admiral be put in charge of a single little station. (even if it turns out to be the most strategially important station in the galaxy)

Because it orbits their homeworld

It takes place afterwards, and some of the crew transfered. They aren't there at the start of the show.

I believe there is some tension and skeptism from the federation beurocracy as this developes.

No. Bajor gained control over the station after the Cardassian occupation ended.

But it doesn't belong to the Feds. The Feds did want to put someone more senior there, after the station became important, but Bajor calls the shots and insited on Sisko.

My ranking:
Best TNG
2. ENT
3. DS9
4. TOS
5. VOY
worst: the Animated Series

1) It is such a small station, and originally so unimportant, that Sisko is only a Commander when the series starts. Some starships, albeit small ones, are also commanded by commanders. Same in the USNavy.

2) The Federation is asked to administer the station due to more experience. Do you consider Bajorans inferior? If you remember, there are Bajorans who are actually in Starfleet: Ro Laren, Sito Jaxa. The Cardassians abandoned the station.

3) people do get transferred once in a while, and in this case O'Brien and Worf were brought on because they were familiar faces. Picard is on the first episode, and Sisko resents him at first. Actually, O'Brien was there from the beginning.

Star Trek is fiction, and even part fantasy. Strange things are real in the Star Trek universe.

What this boils down to, is Space is a racist who cannot come to terms with his bigotry. He views DS9 in such a manner because of the placement of a black actor in such a lead role.

BTW Picard had a small role in the first DS9 episode because the Enterprise brought Sisko to his new command (DS9). I think DS9 started during the 5th or 6th season of TNG, with O'Brian, but without Worf, who came later to DS9....I personally think DS9 was great, but not neccessarily the first season(s).....

This question has already been covered somewhat, but I'll elaborate a bit more. An Admiral is a rather presitgious position, and the Federation only has so many. A certain number will be commanding starship squadron or groups, others will be in key adminstrative desk jobs, and the others will be in charge of other important installations.

The key to keep in mind about the station when he initially takes it over is that its really a backwater. The main reason its important in the first place is its strategic position in relation to the Cardassians, who would generally not be considered at the top of the Federation's most important enemies. Its a station far away from the the core of the Federation, with most of the civillians leaving since the Cardassians have now left at the start of Benjamin Sisko's command. Its only once Sisko discovers the wormhole that the importance of the station really changes. At that point the Federation already has "a man on the ground" at the station, and replacing him might agrivate an already tense situation. Sisko's relations with the Bajorans also gave the Federation a very good reason not to try replacing him and risk seriously harming those relations.

At least until you talk about him commanding large forces during the Dominion War, I actually felt this aspect of the plot was fine and I wouldn't consider this an area that I would criticize the show in.

He´s not mentally ill. He is The Chosen One... And he is highly thought of by Starfleet Command. They don´t give Admiral stripes to chimps, you know...

quote:
Professional Assessment: Report of Starfleet Command Evaluation Board

Sisko has been an exemplary commander in the new hot spot at DS9, although at times he has shown a streak of stubborn independence that has defied orders yet carried the day in the long run. He disobeyed direct orders to stay at DS9 during the Romulan-Cardassian covert invasion of the Dominion, and risked the Defiant to retrieve Odo anyway; at another time he delayed delivery of a Jem'Hadar youth until he made his escape, trusting in Odo's belief the boy could be raised against his genetic programming to fight. In still another instance, he liberally interpreted the word evacuate during the Bajoran coup threat to delay the withdrawal of his forces.

When trapped in the 21st century's Bell Riots, he risked his life to assume the identity of prematurely killed riot namesake Gabriel Bell and even took a bullet in the shoulder to preserve the timeline after he and Doctor Bashir's accidental arrival. Sisko has also made a bit of history in 2371 as the first sponsor of a Ferengi cadet to Starfleet Academy, Rom's son and Jake's friend Nog — but not before putting the boy to the test.

While Sisko's direct intervention to rescue Cardassia's civilian Detepa Council may have been questionable with Klingons nearing Cardassia Prime, along with the unauthorized use of the cloaking device, his heavily re-armed station helped persuade Gowron that division among Alpha Quadrant powers is exactly what the Dominion Founders want.

Sisko has risked his life on more than one occasion in the line of duty, including working from the Cardassian War Room to retrieved the Defiant when stolen by Tom Riker of the Maquis, then negotiating for the release of hostage Kira, the ship and its Maquis crew in return for surrendering their leader without the customary death sentence in store. He was also ready to self-destruct the Defiant rather than let it start another war with the Tzenkethi as part of a Dominion Founders sabotage.

1. I would speculate that most Stardock Starbases are commanded by captains. I think 70 percent of the Admirals are on Earth. And some of the remasinder are clustered together at other key locations. I wonder how many admirals there are? 200? I'd like to see a list of names, species, ages, locations, numbers of pips, and responsibilities.

According to the Star Charts book, DS9 isn't really all that far from Earth, unless it's significantly far above or below the galactic plane, which I somehow don't think so.

Sisko was at least promoted after the station became more important.

5. They're addicted.

The Borg have a manifest destiny to rule the galaxy until the Kelvans arrive, who then get to rule the Local Group. And then the Q decide to directly control the universe.

I agree about the first season(s) of DS9 being... eh...

I don't recall Nog really proving himself adequately before being admitted to the academy, but eh.

And who the heck are the Tzenkethi already? A rogue Andorian clan?

Enlighten me on how the writers indicated that they hate the Irish. I got a couple drops of Irish blood, and I sure don't hate them. Norwegians, on the other hand, love making fun o' themselves.

Tired of ads?

DS9 was easily the best of the Star Trek series. It actually had good writing, good story archs and in-depth characterization. It was actually a gripping drama set in space rather than a space setting with some vestiges of drama draped on it, like most SciFi shows.

And Sisko was also easily the best of the commanders, after Kirk.

As stated, originally, it wasn't in a strategically important location - the wormhole increased it's significance, and later the war with the dominion did, but by the end of the pilot, Sisko was already considered the Emissary by the Bajorans. That means it's a good diplomatic and political move to keep him there.

The Federation and Bajorans came to a power sharing agreement, of which having a bajoran second in command was part.

Only O'Brian and Worf are on DS9 - O'Brian left the Enterprise in season 5 or 6 so he could work at DS9 and raise a family. Worf join in Season 4, after TNG had finished it's run (though he returns to the enterprise every so often so he can appear in the movies.
