quote: Over the next few days you will see on the television news shows, and in the print news media the story of a Military Police Squad who are heroes. Through those outlets, I doubt that their story will get out in a truly descriptive manner. I can't express to you the pride, awe, and respect I feel for the soldiers of call sign Raven 42.
On Sunday afternoon, in a very bad section of scrub-land called Salman Pak, on the southeastern outskirts of Baghdad, 40 to 50 heavily-armed Iraqi insurgents attacked a convoy of 30 civilian tractor trailer trucks that were moving supplies for the coalition forces, along an Alternate Supply Route. These tractor trailers, driven by third country nationals (primarily Turkish), were escorted by 3 armored Hummers from the COSCOM*... |
Anybody post on this yet?
Like to get Chris and Mike and Oerdin's insights on the tactics and performance.
Has this been on the news or papers?

The VC awardee in Iraq certainly risked his life and showed great courage, but at the near-superhuman level that was expected of VC winners in the 19th and early 20th centuries? He should have recieved a lesser medal IMHO. |
Here's the incident in question:
In the first incident in May 2004, Pte Beharry was driving the Platoon Commander’s Warrior armoured vehicle that had been called to the assistance of a foot patrol caught in a series of ambushes. The Warrior was hit by multiple rocket propelled grenades, causing damage and resulting in the loss of radio communications. The platoon commander, the vehicle’s gunner and a number of other soldiers in the vehicle were injured. Pte Beharry showed initiative and great courage driving through the ambush, taking his crew, and leading five other Warriors to safety. He then demonstrated outstanding bravery by extracting his wounded colleagues from the vehicle, all the time exposed to further enemy fire.
-------
Hm. Driving through many RPGs, no ability to communicate, drviing through more ammunition as a dead duck essentially (his gunner was injured), stopping, removing said soliders from the vehicle, again in the line of fire, to safety.
I'd like to see you try to run through that crossfire for that length of time without saying "Yep, there's a strong chance I will die".

Off-Topic, but has anyone read about Tony Blair's recent awarding of a VC to a British soldier in Iraq?

err you what?
VCs were given out a lot more in the 19th century. the fact this is the first awarded since 1982 should tell you something.
your opinion, however humble, is very wrong.

this isn't about your idiotic politics. it's about a man whose courageous actions richly deserve recognition.
