Depends, Ned. The bay around Los Angeles is prone to underwater landslides, which can produce megatsunamis. Regular earthquakes can only produce a wave 30 meters high, at the most powerful, and that's very rare.

If a tsunami was produced by this quake, it will have already struck Sumatra, but it may be a little bit longer before we hear about it, since there was a power outage and the areas first hit will be out of the communications grid. We'll only hear something immediately if Banda Aceh gets hit, and that may take a bit longer.

There have been aftershocks in previous quakes that were as bad as the original quake. BTW, anything above 8 constitutes a major quake.

Florida would be okay. We have a huge shelf which would suck the power out of the wave well before it reached shore. It takes the sustatined power of hurricane to generate large waves on the West Coast of Florida. Most of the time, it's pretty waveless.

Yeah, I saw. Evacuations were ordered thanks to the US & Japanese sunami warning system in the Pacific but no one knows if there will be a sunami. A lot will depend upon the relative motions of the two halves of the fault line.

CNN is reporting wide spride panic in coastal areas of southeast Asia but it is very late there so many people will be sleeping and not hear the evacuation call.
