Sounds like they need to have some boot applied to the ass then. I can guarantee you that peer review is not a joke in my field. The really respected journals (Physical Review, J App Phys, Astrophysical Journal etc) are very difficult to get published in, and the quality of the papers contained within them is very very high.

You have got to compare, though, what they could make if they went into business.

Suffering from ads?

People who go into business in my field are generally the ones who couldn't get a faculty appointment.

Obviously correct. If one does not believe in making a profit, they should not be in the private sector.

So much for ethics, then.

But, I would hardly agree. Business can be a lot of fun. PhD's in business primarily invent new things that really help people. This is more than fun, it is life affirming.

Tired of ads?

No, they become cogs in a machine, doing work that would force a real researcher to gouge his eyes out due to the tedium.

When something is very important, I would think some exceptional peer review is in order.

I think any peer review at all is in order, given what you've said.

I doubt that very much. I know what professors in real academic fields of study do all day and you aren't even in a real academic field.

Your knowledge may be restricted. My parents are both professors, and they never have any time for anything. And maybe my parents are the exception. But I get the impression that the parents of my friends back in high school (also generally professors) didn't have that much leisure time either.

Also, the reality of the academic field really doesn't effect the amount of work. Work in academia is work in academia.

I'd hazard a guess that most of the professors under 60 years old in my department work at least 60 hours a week.

Got spare money?

Funny that it takes you three different descriptors to describe teaching functions.

Teaching, TAing, and grading

F***ing pansies. My Dad taught 30+ years while doing research and being a full time farmer. He put himself through school (paid in full by himself) by working a full time job (outside of the academia functions) in addition to those pansy ohhh sooo hard activities such as TAing and OMFG grading while completing undergrad in 3 years. Did his masters the same way in 1.5 yrs and his doctorate work another 1.5 years.

Stop your sniveling and work for a change.

$20,000/annum too f*king bad. Pops was doing that while in school and supporting a pregnant wife back in the 60's.

$20k per year in the '60s was a pretty good wage.
