Some people here get too fancy for midnight snacks:

sliced whole wheat bread is better than white, by far.

Deli meats are good, but rarely last more than one or two weeks, so unless you plan to have a lot of sandwiches, get them in small amounts (say quarter pounds).

Tuna is good- thought a bit longer to prepare than any deli sandwiches.

For something "high class", tomatos and Brie on french bread is a great, simple sandwich.

Home made white pwns most store bought wheats. As far as wheat goes, Brownberry's Stone Ground Wheat is best. Last time I made whole wheat breat, it was like a brick. I have a Kitchenaid now, so my next batch should be much better.

Mint sauce? Everything besides that sounds fine. Mint suace would be good on something like a grilled or heated sandwhich.

How could I forget the chip butty?

Take two pieces of white bread. Butter both of them. Layer french fries on top of one piece, add ketchup, place other slice on top to seal the sandwhich, Eat.

Can also be fried or have potato chips added for extra crunch.

My local kebab shop does a heavenly variation after a night out drinking: Pita bread stuffed with chips and topped with sauce of choice.

There was a place north of Baltimore that had the best Cheese steak hogie ever. On top of the steak they added sauteed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, pizza sauce and melted provologne cheese.
