Like when JP II forgot to mention that the Church was sorry about the whole heresy charge against Galileo and had no business sticking its theological nose into the realms of pure science.

Papal infallibility is rather like pregnancy- as you can't be slightly pregnant, you can't be slightly or more or less, infallible.


It's a profoundly insulting notion to imagine that even all Catholics would imagine for a moment that a mere human would be infallible. I'd say it borders on the heretical. But I suppose as church heresies go, it's slightly less trouble making than monophysitism or Nestorianism, or Arianism.

I agree with that. One of the interesting things about Christianity is we think we're the smart ones and the ancients were innocent and naive. But homosexuality, abortion, birth control were all well known in Jesus time and he has virtually nothing to say about them. He doesn't seem very interested in human sexuality at all. The message seems to be love your neighbour as yourself as these things will sort themselves out.

Drake, I have no intimate knowledge of whether these popes were black or not absent some pictures of the man; but I think the reason these popes may be considered black by many is that they hailed from Africa.

But, as we all know, resident's of Rome's African provinces at the time were not, on the average, racially black.

I think Americans are disqualified primarily due to the stain of pedophilia in the American Church. The Cardinals will in no way want to be seen as endorsing that by elevating an American to the Papacy.

But, in this regard, the Cardinals should also consider someone who will take a hard line on the abusive American priesthood. Pope JP II was far too lienient, IMHO.

The US is too religious IMHO, they will be wanting a pope from where they can get some new members.
So Africa does look like a prime candidate, on the other hand the're loosing a lot of ground in South-America.
