i agree.

However, I would also like to see a few spear+cat pairs thrown in, in place of an immortal every now and then.

They build faster, and if I am not mistaken cost the same in shields?

Agreed. There will definitely be a few Spears in our Immortal stack. Same defence, 33% cheaper. Cats too, but aas Trip says, not just yet!

Let us consider a stack. it's got 3 immortals and a horse in it. let's consider another stack. it's got 2 immortals, a cat, horse and a spear in it. which is the stronger stack? Both cost the same. One is massively better than the other.

remember that cats can inflict damage *at no risk to themselves* and provide a good defence bonus to other units they are with, and can improve the chance of survival of our front line immortals by a huge margin.

Actually, now is a good time to start discussing this.

I'm kinda torn between building heaps of Immortals, and putting together a fast Horseman army. It's pretty hard to coordinate both types of units in the one stack.

I'm also in favour of compiling two separate stacks, attacking from different directions. It plays havoc with their ability to defend properly, spreading their defences thinly and keeping them guessing.

Thoughts?

Spearmen and Cats are 20 shields each, Immortals are 30... so a Spear/Cat pair is actually 33% more than an Immortal.

Cats in small numbers aren't very useful. If we want to use Cats then I would only encourage using them in massive numbers. But really, right now I would say the utility of Immortals is much greater. Their power is such that we're pretty sure of killing anything that gets in range of being attacked. Cats are good for softening things up while Immortals can kill them outright. And if 2 teams decide to attack us we need to kill as much as possible - we don't have room to try and soften our enemies up - we need them dead, as many as possible.

Good thoughts Trip. I would agree with no Cats for now, though I would still build a few Spears to accompany the Immortals.

Now, what about some more Horsies?

I would say that our situation warrants 4:2:1 ratio of Immortals:Horses:Spears.

haha, yes indeed!

I had not noticed immortals where 30 shields, had them in my head as costing 40 (and 20 a piece for cats & Spears). So imortals are the same cost as Horsies! Let us build imortals and nothing else, that being the case.

Ahhh, I return from my enforced hiatus just in time to see the fields turning that beautifully rich shade of red, dyed with the blood of both valiant defenders of Desolation Row and the evil, corrupt, dishonest, unkempt weenie hordes of Euphorica. Good stuff.

I'm trying to get caught up at the moment, but it looks like everything is covered.

Oh, and glad to see you noticed the prophesy, Aqua.

1990BC: Military buildup continues. We will soon have 2 Barracks cities producing Immortals.

5 of the Maginificent Seven have been sent out and about, one of whom is in striking distance of the new Euphorican Horse colony. Let's hope it proves to be undefended

We only have 3 Horsemen left - probably the same number Euphorica built before we destroyed their Horse Colony.

We have around 5 Immortals with more on the way.

we need to settle on the number of military units we believe we need to launch our attack. Remember, we are nearing the Middle Ages and we need to nobble Euphorica before they can build Riders. Therefore our first strike cannot afford to fail. Bear in mind that our slow moving Immortals will be exposed to Euphorican attack for probably 2 turns before they will be in a position to attack themselves, so we must expect significant attrition rates.

My feeling is that we should send an attack force with the following composition:

10 Immortals
4 Spears
3 Horses
3 Cats

The main issue to decide is whether army goes in a single stack, or whether a subsidiary stack is sent in a different direction to harrass them and further split their forces.

I estimate this will take us a further 8 turns to amass.

Other strategies, suggestions?

Single stack, no doubt. Taking our limited time into consideration, the makeup looks good, but in a perfect world, I'd agree with Moonbars on more cats especially.

Referring to the map below, you can see my intended strike route. There is a Worker currently roading the Oasis tile 7 of Sidon. Next he will move 4 and road that tile, while still out of view of the Euphorican towns of Metallica and U2.

When ready to attack then, our forces will move out of Sidon 748, putting them on the desert tile within 2 tiles of both Metallica and U2. The Euphoricans must then split their defensive forces between the two towns, not knowing which way we will move.

Included in the stack will be our 3 Horses, with perhaps one or two more that we may be able to build beforehand. The importance of the Horses is that at this point, they could strike directly at either town the very next turn....this will freak out our foe

Meanwhile, my idea is to then move due north to the plains tile 1 of U2 in a feint that will draw their defensive units back to that town, then next turn move the whole stack onto the Iron Hills (which may well be defended), cutting off Metallica and making it a sitting duck for our strong stack.

I'm toying with the idea though of splitting the stack so that maybe 4 Immortals move onto the Iron Hill while the rest of the stack attacks U2 directly.

Thoughts?

if we have to attack the iron hill, we'll split our stack because the attackers will have to remain on the plain. this is not good, it might be better to move onto the other hill, or attack from the plain - at least then the stack remains intact.

True.

But if we have enough units in our stack, we can attack and (hopefully) destroy U2, then turn the remaining attackers on the Iron Hill in order to destroy Metallica the following turn. Granted, it may be better to move them onto the plains instead, but the hill may be worth taking for the defensive bonus. I guess it depends on the number of units they have defending the hill.

We also have to ensure that Sidon remains adequately. defended. Horsemen from Nirvana can reach Sidon in one turn, and we know they have at least 3 Horses.

As we all know, the world has changed drastically in the last few days.

With a signed peace treaty with us in their pocket, the Horde have just turned on their former ally Euhphorica and captured the town of Metallica. We are expected to follow their lead in 2 or 3 turns, which I fully intend to do once our Immortals have healed. The Bab threat has dissipated.

We must participate in this raping of Euphorican lands lest the Horde run through the enemy too quickly and we miss out on the spoils. I have already committed some 14 Immortals and Cat support to Paddy.

My initial idea is to make our way towards Nirvana.

Thoughts?

Nirvana looks like the best target to me.

However, I think we need to be mindful of the bigger picture here. The Horde are allies out of neccessity - I beleive they will turn on us as soon as they can. I'd expect this when our army is deep in Euphorican territory. They have already betrayed two of their former allies..

can we work out from the turn order who did the spy job? Must have been AM or LBs.. We can see AM's Grog on the shot - could it have been them, I am not sure the LBs would have seen that unit if they'd done the spy.

Spoke with Paddy about invasion. We discussed settling the site of Sidon with this turn's new settler, sending out our army with him, and then strike north between U2 and Nirvana - our target would be Nirvana.

After that I say we head for Beach Boys and get the furs. We should be mindful however that the Euphorican survivors are camped out in the hills, healing up..

It must have been AM, since LB wouldn't see either that Warrior or the BOH stack.

I suggest we send them a sternly worded official protest.

[EDIT: Just emailed them with my protest....let's see what comes of it]

We can't trust anyone at all in this game. Let's help the Horde to wipe out the Euphoricans but let's keep an eye on their stack at all times. Perhaps a few stray horsemen here and there?

The turn will come around again soon.

What are people's thoughts on the attack force to be sent northwards towards Nirvana? From memory I think we'll have the capacity to send about 14 fully healed Immortals and somewhere between 3 and 5 Cats from Antioch to accompany the Settler who will re-establish Sidon Phoenix. Probably should put a few Vet Spears in there too to protect our valuable Immortals.

Remember we cannot really delay since the Horde have Horsemen and AC. they will run through Euphorica fairly quickly, so we need to get up there immediately.

But we must watch our backs!

There seems to be an alliance germinating against the Horde. Paddy alluded to this in my discussion with him today, and now 1889 of the LB has just sent this email:

Picking sides should be easy now. Looks like its a two faction game. If you want to help us take down BOH simply do nothing. You've certainly earned a break and I think we can handle this for a while. So are you in?

We must be very careful how we proceed - it is quite possible that AM and LB will join Babylon and Euphorica in an attempt to overwhelm the Horde. Certainly Euphorica will be encouraging this very quickly as their only hope to save their cities.

I will send a general email to Krill and ormuzd to try to suss out their attitude to this.

This attempt at an alliance is over before it has started.

Krill's response:

No way in hell would I join an alliance as suicidal as that.

Ormuzd's comment:

I think this alliance is the alliance of the first three eliminated teams

That means it's just Babylon and Euphorica with LB thrown in for good measure. That isn't going to trouble the Horde too much, though hopefully it may damage them a little

I suggest we respond to 1889 with a cautious approval of the sentiment and perhaps an open ended suggestion of assistance at some indeterminate time down the track once we have had a chance to "recover" from the destitution of war. This may give them the confidence they need to attack.

Time for some deviousness of our own chaps?

Did we make any military alliance with the Horde?
