Now I can stop my baseless, profanity-laced tirades against the RNG gods and replace them with fact-based, profanity-laced tirades aimed at the RNG gods. For instance, when I attack a vet Numidian (Rise of Rome) with an elite Heavy Cav (Attacker chance of winning: 83%), watch it die, then bring in a second elite HC for the attack (chance of winning, now that the NM is down to 2 HP: 96%)... and watch it die, eliciting a string of creative profanity and disbelief. I'm sure it's just that I don't usually attack when my odds of success are less than 5%, and don't usually let my defenders get into that situation, but I've seen way too many AI units win when there's really no way they should, and way too many of my units lose when their advantage is overwhelming to have anything but disdain and disgust for the RNG gods. May all their altars be burned to the ground and may they all be smotened by Rickey Henderson and General Zod. [/rant]

Not another rant at the little RNG guy inside your computer. I mean come on, how many times have you attacked since you got Civ? Probably about a 97 times, so it is right on target that you should have lost this one time. It was clearly an example of an overly confident comander going into battle without due respect for his enemy. I'm willing to bet that the chargers where careless in their formation, and that the Spearmen were lead by Numidian William Wallace. Spearmen are the perfect anti-cavalry units anyway.

P.S. when spearmen defeat an attacking tank, they are leaning out of upstairs windows with molotov coktails, not standing in Phalanx formation.

Meh, one isolated battle I grumble about and go on. Two in a row from freaking Super Merc, on top of a couple of dozen <5% chance wins by the AI scattered throughout the day's play, provokes a rant. I'm attacking a lot, but not THAT damn much.

	Increase the size of your Attachments

If you kept specific track of the results that are the most likely as well as you do the odd ones [by writiing all results down], you'll find the stats over time are right. The human mind is terriable at remembing wins that are expected, but excelent at remembering loses that aren't.

Your argument is exactly like a Texas Hold'm player whining when his oppoent had exactly one out on the turn and drowns on the river when said oppoent gets it. (Forgetting about that coin flips you've won while remembering the coin flips your opponets have won)

Actually, I meant a 'real' Roman decimation: Very rarely done, but in punishment for cowardice, one out of ten troopers were killed by their own.

I LOVE it when my attacking units totally blow it and are destroyed! It means their abilities were deficient anyway, and they deserved it. Of course, perhaps their training was deficient and they were passed anyway.

When units or individuals have passed a course (or "training") without deserving it, rest assured that, sooner or later, they WILL get what's coming to them.

Imagine playing a PBEM where each player has two tribes. Imagine having a great start with one of them (the only free city of 6 non-Expansionist civs). Imagine killing a city for free with your Daimyo. Imagine an enemy Warrior killing that Daimyo (and your better tribe along with the unit) next turn (just over 5% chance...). True story.

That's rough! I will say it's a lot easier to deal with those flukes when another human is the beneficiary, as opposed to a faceless AI.

I had a similar deal first time I played Sengoku, and went out barb-hunting with my Daimyo. First barb warrior-equivalent he attacked did him in.

Ya, insane like a fox. Daimyo only defend at 2 and considering the stakes risking a warrior is a great deal.

Exactly. It was very early in the game, so my Daimyo had just 2 defense. I ran into the city not really knowing what was expecting me there (2 moves used, entering an empty size 1 settlement). Paddy used the cheapest units available, so his expacted loss would be small. I OTOH lost a whole tribe to the RNG gods. Come to think of it, I should get like a year of pure luck for that kind of sacrifice.

Going off the track for a second, T, I played Sengoku through for the first time a couple weeks ago, and highly recommend you giving it a try. It's a warmonger's dream as far as unit selection goes, and several of them are amphibious.
