Understood.

I would want the job because it would help me pay my bills, I'm already a night owl, and it seems like work I would be good at.

Would I have a passion for that work? Not really. Good luck finding someone though that does.

cut off the other 8. Then, you can sue for discrimination when they won't hire you for typing with only 2.

Generally brighter, with a higher proportion of the class interested in learning more about their chosen subject rather than just furthering their employment prospects. Still only a few though.

Passion isn't quite needed, but a desire to do it longterm and the ability to enjoy it certainly helps. And you would be surprised. I've encountered many people who are thrilled to have such jobs and enjoy coming to work for them.

Depends on the job, I suppose--many jobs don't require expert typing. And I don't think technique would matter as much as raw speed and accuracy, anyway. Not my area of expertise, but I think a reasonable speed to have would be 40 wpm or so, based on resumes I've seen for admins/clerks/etc.

In liberal arts (US), a masters means either 1) the person is teaching high school or 2) They couldn't make it through the PhD program and this is the consolation prize.

either way...

In non-liberal arts fields, a masters is more meaningful, of course, and in some cases a worthwhile end in itself.

Put an end to popups!

just a tad

--

Now, about me (my favorite subject )

the job the recruiter called me about on Friday is outside of the pharmaceutical field, it's specialty chemicals. Requires 2 to 4 years process engineering experience, but doesn't indicate in what arena. I assume pharma is close enough. Makes me worry though, shifting within an industry is fine, but I wonder if I am going to screw myself by moving industries all together.

Any thoughts?

That's in the US. A Masters degree is a prereq for a PhD program outside North America (mind you, a PhD is shorter too - 3 years).

Masters programs in Australia are only 1 - 1.5 years.

Lose 30 kilos (of popups)

in physics a masters is about 2 years of classes

a PHD is then ~3 years of research ontop of that

most people do not end on a masters (in fact, the programs won't accept you unless you are going for your PHD)

I've not read this thread so forgive if I'm repeating what someone else said.

I've been an interviewee and I've interviewed people - I can tell you, interviews suck as a method of screening people. I've seen instances in which a person did terrific job at an interview but turns out to be one of worse employees. And there were some people that did awful at their interviews but my intuition told me to hire them and I had to persuade fellow interviewers to give them a chance and they wind up becoming one of best assets to the organization.

Interviews suck but I guess we need a way to select people.

With that out of the way - I once applied to McDonald's and was turned down. I was mortified! But fortunately the rejection led me to search on and I landed a terrific job somewhere else so I can't complain.

I was turned down by McDonald's. Though they weren't really hiring. I put in an application anyways.

McDonald's are hard jobs to get for teenagers where I live. People tend to look at teenagers as irresponsible for some reason. Fast food restaurants normally hire adults where I live.

Full PM-box? Change here!

I'm a little surprised about the comment that "when i was hired I was promised a promotion in 2 years"

No promotions should be automatic, they should be based on attaining work goals or performance goals. Time shouldn't guarentee anything. And promising employees things that may not happen is the best way to lose employees.
