lol It is a word, but a very ... uncommon one. Felid is also a word - related to Feline, and/or a specific type of cat. But neither one exactly rolls off the tongue. (Third choice was Geoid, which i actually thought might be it, but waited fortunately until the L was guessed.)

A word guess can be made at any time, but you can't make a letter and a separate word guess simultaneously, though I doubt it is expressly forbidden in the rules.

I'd just say:

If only one letter remains unguessed, only word guesses are allowed.

-OR-

If only one letter remains unguessed, letter guesses count as word guesses.

That way, the double-guess we saw here would be disallowed, because the first one would be counted as a word guess, and thus the player would get kicked out if it was wrong and not be able to make the second guess.

I agree with the first part - but the second part doesn't apply. There were 2 letters left at the time.

Why not? The rules explicitly say you can make a word guess AT ANY TIME. I'll give you that at 2 letters left and 1 remaining in the word it's sort of dodgy (i think i realize what people were saying ' 1 left ' and not meaning what I meant by it), but ... with 5 letters left, why not? Get a letter guess in, and then you suddenly see the word five minutes later - why penalize you?
