I'm not arguing what the rules say - you've already (correctly) made the point that the rules do not forbid what happened.
However, I don't see a rationale for allowing someone to make a letter guess and a word guess simultaneously, at any time. It's just worse when there is one letter left.
If you make a letter guess then see the word, tough, you shouldn't have jumped the gun. 
There is an unwritten rule (maybe more a tradition) against it - no one does it, because it's obviously greedy.
Now, it is hard to expect someone new to know the unwritten rules. Ergo, it should be added to the rules. This will also deal with those who enjoy reading the letter of the law and try to think of ways to flout it.

Okay  I guess i see a difference between "guess 3" seeing the word, and "guess 9" trying to earn 2 guesses. But, if the rest of you don't, that's fine.
