because, the other countries are catching up to us in terms of economics. they too are becoming connected with the world. our advantage is being slowly reduced.

Standard of living is a far more important criterion for judgement. As Agathon said, you rave on about your economic model but how well does that filter down to the general populace?

yeah, thats what Friedman said too. India, China, Southeast Asia, Japan to a smaller extent. it would be interesting to see how China stacks up to the US when they get rid of their peg.

I wouldn't be too worried about Japan; their economy has too many of the same problems that are plaguing Europe. Of course, the rise of China may be enough to get them off their asses to make some serious reforms, so who knows?

Our economy is rapidly restructuring, moving into the areas in which we have a comparative advantage.

Sweden (and much of Western Europe) uses an economic model that allows them to create a higher standard of living than America, but limits their overall economic strength and, consequently, the amount of power they can exert in the world. That's fine if you want to just sit back and relax in your currently safe neighborhood, but it's pretty worthless if you want to actually play a leading role in world affairs.

Hey, I'm all for getting rid of all of this ridiculousness. But it would be a mistake to focus unduly on this when a lot is happening in industries other than those impacted by protection.

Why would you want to play a leading role in world affairs. The world isn't getting any better because of some schmuck in the white house telling the world what to do so he can earn some more bucks. Besides, Sweden is too small to play a leading role in the world, yet still they have a higher standard of living than you

I don't know that to be true. US companies sell about 1/2 of the world's semiconductors by value, which is about as well as they have ever done. It is true that some of those semiconductors are manufactured by our companies overseas, of course.
