I haven't heard of anything like that here -- altho in certain situations, I guess there could be.

My guess is that's more of a Hawaii thing. People tend to move to Hawaii, live there for about a year, get "rock fever" and move back to the mainland.

I know it's hard to get work in Alaska unless you've already lasted one winter there without going bonkers.

Yep, there is no rule that you have to live here before getting a job. You can get a job the day you arrive. I started working 3 months after I got here, and that seemed like an eternity since I was running out of money.

yeah, my friend whose in California right now (she's originally from Idaho) said that she thinks its a 'Hawaii Pride' thing.

I just don't like how because the job market is really tight, everyone seems to be calling in favors and hooking up people with jobs. I'm looking at more opportunities and experiences.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. A tax on what?

BTW: Years ago when I was in Hawaii, the sales tax wasd 4% but that was on everything, including food. In California is -- what? -- around 8 to 8 1/2 % but not on food.

Car insurance is higher in California than in Hawaii because it's not no-fault and because people drive a lot faster. Pineapples are more expensive.

But almost everything else is a lot cheaper, and salaries are higher.

But to be serious here tho,

I don't really care where I work, initially...except fast food. So long as I can have some money to live off of while I search for an actual career...something to do while I search, ya know?

Unfortunately, I don't have much experience directly related to my field. Most of my experience is clerical, but my education is in social services. That's why I want to move to the mainland, because over here I'm being limited to what's available...stuff that isn't even NEAR what I want to do.

Shoot, I'll even volunteer at places that will help out my career as I work at Wal-Mart or whatever while I search and wait to get hired in the career I want.

Yeah, the sales tax is low, but from what I understand the state makes up for it in property tax and in other fees. That, and the general cost of living is pretty high.

Right. Almost everything in Hawaii has to be imported, either by air or through Manson. I found that things in Hawaii cost 10-20% more than in California.

Go to Indiana... California sucks, and is getting worse, what with all the immigrants

Seriously, I live in Cali, and I am looking to leave because I want to be able to afford to have a family and a life.

California is not materialistic in the way I think you are taking what Ted to mean. It IS materialistic, but we are also laid back and you can wear whatever you want to work. Just make sure you talk about all the expensive sheit you are doing and buying.

California is good for diversity and the tons of crap to do.

Still,

IMO, go to Indiana.

As for state tax; California taxes everything, twice, and it sucks.

Nah, no experience in that. I'm in this State job now for the networking opportunities which have kind of worked.

Speaking to the clerks at court, I was able to take the test for Juvenile Counselor (entry level), Detention Worker (social services). Basically, I have to get into that damned entry level position to get that valuable experience that I've been lacking BECAUSE of the nepotism that's been preventing me from getting all these things.

California cons:

1. Traffic is a nightmare
2. Housing costs are out of control (renting is relatively still affordable, buying a house has become nearly impossible)
3. Too much emphasis on selfishness, material wealth, and personal appearance
4. Poor family values, this is less of a problem among people who immigrate here from other countries or states

Agree with you everything here. Especially number 3 in the cons.

Last week in newspapers, there was a list of top 5 fastest growing counties in US...

#2 - Riverside County
#3 - Los Angeles County
#5 - San Bernandio County

Something like that.

For those not familiar with SoCal, those counties all are in Southern California and right next to each other.

Growth = traffic, pollution, overcrowding, and ridiciolus property values.

Costa Mesa is a nice place if you live and work there, IMHO. It's within spitting distance of Newport Beach which is a very nice place to be if you don't mind tourists in summer.

I could be wrong but I don't believe so. In most of states, you can move and start working the next day for their state government.

Anyway personally I prefer San Diego (in a county south of Costa Mesa's county. If my job in Riverside doesn't work out, I'm seriously considering moving to San Diego.

Yeah, I might have a problem with that Japh. I'm more of a pizza and beer person instead of a champagne and caviar person. All that designer dress stuff and I tune out the convo pretty fast. I guess I'm a little more simple or whatever, but I like to hear what people think, rather than what they buy....but whatevers.

I'm sure not everyone from California is that way, which is good. Forming prejudgments about people suck azz.

But just so long as I get more opportunities in the Social Services field, then I'm all good.

Well, I plan on going up to California some time in the Summer (July, August or September). Visit my friend and scope out the job market. Hopefully I can find something. If I can get a job guarantee, I'm out of Hawaii and headed to the big leagues.
