Thinking of moving to the States Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

The continental states. The job market here is basically crap. The nepotism here disgusts me. Everywhere I turn, I'm getting turned down or running into roadblocks because of a family member/friend/cousin/etc applying for a similar position. The opportunities here are limited and I want to gain experiences from the continental US. I'm thinking of moving, nay, I'm already SAVING to move away.

I have a friend in California (Costa Mesa) who said that she'll let me bunk with her while I get myself planted. I have a cousin in Indiana who said that I can stay with him while I look for a job. At first, I don't really care WHERE I work, so long as I have revenue coming in. Then, I plan on looking for a career in my field.

My field of study is Public Safety (in other words, Corrections. But also Social Services). For corrections, it's more administration instead of being a CO (correction officer). Social Services, it doesn't really matter. Both my friend and my cousin said that their states have a large need for people like me.

I have my BA. Work history--->I've stayed with my past employers for at least a year. Right now I work for the State part time in their law office. In Hawaii, to work for the State you need to be a resident for at least 1 yr before you are employed. Is this like the other states?

Anyway, I just want to know about the continental US states. I've looked at some of the local govt websites, but that doesn't tell me firsthand experience that some of you may have. Friends told me that my best bet is California because they have a large Correctional infrastructure that I can get into...but for me, I don't care where. California, Oregon, Indiana, Chicago, Houston, LA....whatever.

Just want to get some idea's from y'all on what you think.

EDIT: I have to work for a few years and save before I can go back and get my Masters and PhD. That, and I wanna get some work experience so I can go back to school with another set of eyes.

California pros:

1. Wealth of opportunity
2. Wealth of diversity in people
3. Lots of stuff to do
4. Kick azz weather
5. Awesome landscape and diversity in landscape (the old phrase you can snow ski and surf in the same day)

California cons:

1. Traffic is a nightmare
2. Housing costs are out of control (renting is relatively still affordable, buying a house has become nearly impossible)
3. Too much emphasis on selfishness, material wealth, and personal appearance
4. Poor family values, this is less of a problem among people who immigrate here from other countries or states

Indiana pros:

1. Land is SUPER cheap
2. Economy is relatively stable
3. People are very nice
4. Pace of life is laid back
5. Peace and quiet
6. University educational system is VERY good

Indiana cons:

1. Not as many opportunities as California
2. Winter sucks, everything dies and it gets cold and gloomy
3. Outside of Indianapolis and the Chicago suburbs, not much of a cosmopolitan (city) scene. For some this can be a big plus.
4. Population is homogeneous, as is most of the landscape in the northern 2/3rds of the state, which is flat farmland made up of an exclusively white population

Put an end to popups!

My cousin said he lives about a 10 minute drive from Indianapolis, whatever that means.

My co-worker from DC said that most people talk distance in terms of minutes and hours instead of miles....but maybe he's just old and senile.

For California, I'd probably be living in Costa Mesa. Where the heck is that? N, S, W, E? And for me...yeah, I'm not very materialistic so unless my employer (hopefully the State of California) cares that I'm not wearing designer duds, I don't really care. I mean, I don't dress like a hobo...but I'm not paying $100 for no damn pair of pants. 60 at the most.

Tired of ads?

Costa Mesa is in north Orange County. Orange County is the county just south of Los Angeles County. If you live there, you will hear the term 'South Coast Plaza' which is a mall there with alot of very upscale shops where alot of people with alot of money shop.

In terms of what you are wearing, I think you would be fine. The other thing to keep in mind is that California dress is very casual. At work, I'm the only one that wears slacks and a dress shirt, everybody else wears jeans and a short sleeve shirt.

East Coast people dress much more formal.

Thanks Ted. Yeah, for work I wear slacks with "business aloha" shirts. Very tame and not loud. Hard to describe, I'll try find a pic.

For Indiana, my cousin looks very Caucasian so he fits in well. I'm more tanned. In NY they thought I was mexican. Basically, I just don't want to be too mistreated. Florida was bad. My friends who look more asian than myself and I were at Perkins restaurant and didn't get served for 1 1/2 hours, when the next table with our more caucasian looking friend was served in less than 15 min.

As for car...that might be a problem. I'd need to work more before I get a car, probably would start off with a bike or moped.

So, Costa Mesa is above LA? Wow, thanks Ted for your input. How's the job market like for where I want to go?

Yeah, ppl in Hawaii don't know how to drive. Our road tests are basically "pull out of the driveway, drive around the block, park next to the sidewalk, return to DMV."

I mention the racial thing only in terms of divesity. Being whitey and growing up around whitey, I like being around people who are different from myself. Almost of my Cali friends are asian, and the girls I have dated have been Hispanic. I like being able to head to the Paki restaurant when I want or maybe I'll go for Japanese. Then there are the more exotic foods you never hear of, we have a Sri Lankan restaurant, and a Muslim Chinese food place.

But then again, I'm a white male so nobody really every mistreats me, so I don't know what it's like on the other side, I just can't put myself in those shoes since I've never been in them.

If you live close enough to work, that shouldn't be a problem.

Costa Mesa is actually south of LA. All the cities in greater Los Angeles kinda blends together to make one big city.

Press the zoom out button twice and you'll see where it is relative to downtown Los Angeles.

You can live large in Indiana as long as you have a steady pay check. The weather is typical midwestern (highs and lows), though Indianapolis doesn't get as much snow as Chicago, et al.

Could you handle the weather?

If your working in corrections, you'll maybe be in a uniform. If not, most probably slacks, a shirt and maybe a tie. If you shop the sales at a place like Penney's, you can probably find a decent pair of slacks for ~ $40.

No aloha shirts.

You'll find almost no nepotism. It's all very civil servicey. Which means you'll need to submit an application, go through an "exam" [that's a job interview, usually before a panel of three] and probably wait a long time.

Most governmental offices in California have a website from which you can download the application. Let me poke around for awhile & see if I can find the website for you.

Got spare money?

Thanks guys.

DanS-Weather is not that bad. I was on the East Coast when it was in the 20's, and I liked it. My face got really dry, but I didn't have to shave so often...maybe like once or twice a week. Cold doesn't really bother me. Heat kind of does but if it's a dry heat, it's ok. Humidity makes a heck of a lot of difference.

Zkribbler- Oh definitely, I'm slowly picking up solid color collared shirts and ties. But in corrections, like I said, I plan on going into another department other than correctional officers. How's the public sector's initial entrance like? Do you have to be a resident to work for the State?

It's either Cali or Indiana simply because I have connections there...but after that, who knows? I might want to move around.
