I don't recall jerry mandering on this scale nor pushed directly by the party leadership (as that corrupt Republican leader Tom Delay has done). I do recall hearing about how Nixon ordered the secret service to attack the opposition and to break into the offices of the Democratic Party. I also remember reading about how Nixon ordered the Army to surround the Congress building when he was being impeached. Luckily the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs issued a delay on the order then got Kissenger and the Attorney General to talk Nixon into recending the order.

If you want to bring up the 1970's then I have tons of ammo to use in order to point out the Republican Party's corrupion, cronyism, and down right criminal activities.

No, THEY Republicans are evil, corrupt, and braindead. The important ones.

What you are isn't relevant, though "bamboozled" and "hornswoggled" probably figured somewhere on the list.

"I also remember reading about how Nixon ordered the Army to surround the Congress building when he was being impeached."

Amazing if fact, never heard of this one before. Got a link by chance?

Nixon was an ass and I wouldn't dream of defending him. Better luck next time Oerdin.

Let me start searching google and see what I can come up with. I read it in a book on Watergate and I know I still have the book some where around the house.

Tired of ads?

The name of the book is "Shadow" and it talks about Richard Nixon's actions before, during, and after the Watergate Scandal. Its a great read. I still haven't found where I put the book but give me some time as I think I have it in a box some where.

Seriously, the policies of the Republican party tend to be very extremist and bad for the long term health of the country plus the Republican party certainly is the biggest source of curroption in the country today. Even if we go back 30-40 years and review various old cases of Democrats acting curroptly you still have Nixon's absolute crimes against the constitution, Iran-Contra, the Banking Scandal, Enron and a bunch of other big, big scandals tied to Republicans. One party is bad and the other is far worse so I choose the lesser of two evils.

The truth of the matter is that the party in power has the most opportunity for corruption. Neither party IMO has a penchant for corruption that sets it apart. Nixon was brought down by both the majority Democrats and moderate Republicans. Iran-Contra caused a massive and long investigation and only returned convictions for lying to Congress (perjury), much as the numerous and lengthy investigations of the Clintons only returned one charge that stuck, perjury. I am assuming that the banking scandal you refer to was the S&L scandal, which was a bipartisan (Keating 5) and ill-conceived change in the laws that allowed the looting of the S&Ls. Enron's violations occurred mostly on the watch of the Clinton administration who kept its hands off just as the Republican controlled legislative branch did. Lay and Skilling and the others have been or are now being prosecuted by a Republican controlled Justice Department.

Moving district lines in order to gain political advantage is Gerrymandering, and again both parties do it where they have control of a state. Your state for instance is Gerrymadered beyond belief to Democrat advantage (and has been for decades) just as Texas is gerrymandered to Republican advantage, albeit more recently.

Sik, it is interesting how the Dems have now cried foul about Gerrymandering when they themselves have been practicing it for as long as memory permits, and then some. When one speaks of corruption and abuse of power, the name Hillary Clinton comes to mind quickly. Think of Travelgate, Filegate and the missing billing records that just happened to be found in her room. Nothing Nixon ever did approached the level of abuse of the system routinely conducted by this first lady.

Since the New Deal, Republicans have been on the wrong side of every issue of concern to ordinary Americans; Social Security, the war in Vietnam, equal rights, civil liberties, church- state separation, consumer issues, public education, reproductive freedom, national health care, labor issues, gun policy, campaign-finance reform, the environment and tax fairness. No political party could remain so consistently wrong by accident.

The only rational conclusion is that, despite their cynical "family values" propaganda, the Republican Party is a criminal conspiracy to betray the interests of the American people in favor of plutocratic and corporate interests, and absolutist religious groups.

It's hard to say. She makes a lot of money being a blonde, seemingly available girl who says bigoted things that right wing men like. It looks to me as if she's riding this as far as it will take her bank balance.

I don't know if she's serious: she's have to be bonkers if she was.

Au contraire many moderate repubs voted to re-elect Clinton as a consequence of those same tactics, myself included. Point of fact it marked my departure from repubs to indie status.

Is that what Dean meant? I thought he referred to Republicans, some of whom are liberals on social issues.

Any attack on Democrats would similarly be misplaced as there are social conservatives in that party as well.

Also, I think there is a difference between traditional economic liberals who simply want to help the downtrodden, and socialists who despise private power. I personally think that most of the traditional liberals have moved to the Republican Party, but there are some remaining in the Democrat Party. Oerdin seems to me to be a traditional liberal, for example.
