I'm not being fair, since Civ can't possibly look as good as this. Being a strategic game at the grand scale, a close-up view like the one seen here would be pointless.

Different genres, too. RTS will always stay different from TBS, and at that, Age of Empires is even not among the strategically complex RTS games, such as RoN or EE2.

If you want great graphics but no content, play AoE.

If you want great, deep gameplay, play RoN or GalCiv or CtP2 or hopefully Civ4...

Edit: Solver sort of beat me to the point...

Mind you, I don't like RTS's in general. Except the Total War series, which is in part RTS. I bought Starcraft, AoE 1 and 2 and they were all boring imo. But you have to admit that AoE 3 is gorgeous!

It looks fantastic. But hey, if I want photorealistic graphics, I'll watch out the window -- that's some damn fine graphics right there

Gameplay makes or breaks a game. Graphics can only break it...

It is very simple. Compared to any RTS, even GalCiv is still a very complex game.

It is because the "S" part is usually missing in those games. (I am not hinting, I am telling.)

Maybe they found the game too easy (I know I did). Heck, MOO3 is easy too, but you can hardly call it simple...

Got spare money?

For those who think graphics do not make the game - that is your opinion.

For many, graphics helps to make the game better, thats why companies continue to make games with better graphics.

And Civilization can have graphics like AoEIII, it's just that no one is daring to take up the challenge. This is something only Peter Molyneux would dare to do.

Also, I think those of you who don't find the look of graphics important, imagine playing Civilization in full text.

Good point Sn00py.

I wonder if we are looking at army groups versus single units in these graphics....could be cool.

I could be completely wrong about this, but I think that the health of each unit will be represented by how many men are in them, due to the lack of an HP bar.

For example, 4 men in the unit would mean a healthy veteran unit, and 1 man would mean a unit that's almost dead. It would be much cooler than just an HP bar.

-Actually, it would be cool if we could have Civ 4 look like THAT, and at the same time have a very deep game. I would not mind at all.

While theoretically true, I believe that is not really doable. You have this tiny little thingie called "budget". It seems to me the those nice graphics (and sound) would chew up quite a big chunk of the budget. Exactly why the RT"S" games often lack the "S" part. Exactly why I am willing to accept much worse graphics that Civ3 already has, if the gameplay is good and deep.

I mean, I still play, and very much enjoy, games like V4V fer chrissakes...

erm... nostromo?.... This is a RTS game. Go see other turn-based strategy games if you wish to compare. I'm quite happy about the units (and hope the mountains get done right).

About the screenshot, thanks snOOpy!
I think that they ARE making it mainstream, but still doing that to bring this to everyone and trying to lose a little possible of the depth (and adding certain new things to make the game more complete... like Civ3 colonies ). To make games less tedious, maybe they are going to take off the modern age?

Oh... and nostromo, I stopped playing Civ but I'm still playing GalCiv (when I get my computer...).

RTS are fun, but not as funny as Civ, because they care more about atention and fast actions than thinking and strategy. Civ grafics are important, but are secondary, so don't care to make then super-realistic (even to don't maKe it so heavy to my computer

Speaking of graphics. I don't think that's a real screenie of Civ4. The tiles look diamond shape and according to the Facts thread -

http://apolyton.net/forums/showthre...threadid=117133
quote:

Based on early screenshots (see below), it can be concluded that the game will use classic square tiles for the map, as in Civ1. This as opposed to Civ2 and Civ3 where diamond shaped tiles were used.

Of course, this could be an incorrect conclusion.

It is false. The graphics do not keep strictly to the grid, so you could get the false impression at this angle. But if you take a look at the two Mountains and that Lake in the background, you can see the tiles are indeed square. Same goes for the first picture in this thread.

We still don't really know anything much abot Civ4 gameplay, though, other than the occasional bits (that DO sound good). The real question is, though, whether Civ4 will have deep gameplay or not. To please the hardcore civers, it has to be deeper than Civ3.

I get the impression rivers are flowing on the boundaries of the grid instead of in the middle. Would the river-effect apply to both sides of the grid? Or is this all optical illusion and are the rivers in the middle of the cells?

Look at where the river is flowing in the first and where the desert tiles meet the grassland tiles in the second. Now assuming Civ4 uses the same river system as Civ3, the river clearly indicates a diagonal flow which indicates diamond tiles.

So, either the facts thread has that part incorrect, or the screenie is from early development prior tio the switch to square tiles.

I don't like it if you'd have to play a mod to have a decent game. I want a good game out of the box. One advantage it gives is standartization, instead of having everyone play one of the 3-4 major mods.
