Civ choice mostly depends on the map. If the map is a small pangea, then agri would be a waste of trait. We would be better off with a civ like Germany then (ultra early archer rushes and scientific for extra tech in MA).
If the map is continents or archi, seafaring provides an obvious advantage, hence Byzant or Dutch, perhaps even English for extra commerce would be better choices.
It is dangerous to delay the research of resource revealing technologies. Hence a civ starting with bronze working or the wheel is my preference. Sumer satisfies this condition and if the world is larger, Sumer can become very powerful due to fast expansion and growth. Their UU is a good early defender and can be produced in great quantities. However, they have one very dangerous flaw: They can't build warriors to upgrade to swords, so they are incapable of launching a sword campaign early in the game. This can be alleviated by their ability to produce tough defenders at cheap price, so archer rushes become an option for Sumer. Needless to say, horse takes precedence to iron for Sumer.
Perhaps we could consider a civ like India. Religious civ, so easy to switch to republic and commercial, so more money or science and starts with alphabet, so republic can be obtained faster. Also, ultra powerful UU.
Also, the smaller the world, the more important the UUs (particularly if ancient) and militaristic trait become.
Therefore, it would be wise to wait and see what the map stats will be and then decide upon the civ to choose.

Pending the settling of map settings and whatnot, is there perhaps a more structured way to get through this kind of discussion?
I haven't even seen the thread yet where a 'starting point' consensus was evidently made that we want AGR (er, don;t even know if that's final, but...)
So, let us categorize the 'why' behind that... I assume that it was as simple as max production from worked best tiles. That's food production, obviously... there is no trait equivalent for shield production, and COM, while valuable, is clearly recognized as subordinate to AGR.
OK, so that is one basic building block to civ selection... we have said: "The basic starting point is building our empire; of the civ traits, AGR is outweighted in that regard to such a point that we want it."
So, from there, it's a discussion of the other civ trait, UU's, starting techs, etc., all in the context of competitors, map characteristics etc.
I said to myself, "Self, how would you structure the further discussion?"
Self answered back: "Read this from front to back, and then from back to front."

I think the strategy in the game is the important point to choose the civ we want.
For "booming" from begin = Maya, maybe Iroqois and Celts
For wars in the first time of the ancient time: Zulu, Atzecs, later Celts, Persia, Rome, Iroqois ...
Or other way: Peacefully in the ancient time, more building and first war in the middle age, than take china.
Imho agri is important and an ancient UU, too. But better think first over the strategy to win the game, than choose the civ.
