For self defense, easy of handling but a one shot stopper. Dependable, assume that she won't clean it regularly and I'll forget.

Include price since throwing away money is frowned upon. Not portable, for use at home when hubby is away. No kids around at all.

This is a not exactly the perfect place to ask gun advise (omglol get awp it owns in cs), but...

For that purpose, I'd recommend any heavy-weight (to minimize recoil) DA revolver (reliability). S&W L-frame has some nice personal defence models you could carry around while shopping and such. Can't you get any expert guidance from your local gun salesman?

Holster carry or purse? If purse I'd probably go with an automatic as little bits of debris (common in the bottom of purses) can get wedged next to the cylinder of a revolver and jam it. Otherwise a revolver would be preferable if she won't ever clean it. But honestly if she isn't practicing with / cleaning her gun then she probably shouldn't carry one. As for caliber, as big as she is comfortable shooting and nothing weaker than .32 to .380. My girlfriend is really feminine and pretty small as well, but I taught her to shoot my .45 well enough to hit a can at 10 paces in one afternoon and less than 50 rounds so don't underestimate your own gf.

If a long arm is suitable, then definitely a 12 gauge shotgun. Don't use a sawed off, it's too indescriminant and wastes a lot of muzzle velocity (and comes with a pretty stiff sentence from the feds as well). A simple defensive shotgun will suffice, like the Winchester Defender. Load it up with 00 buck. I she's scared of the kick, teach her to shoot from the hip.
