Actually, if ther are going to be a SMAC/X II, I guess there are a chance that the testers will be a little mre effective - I for one will gladly join as both alpha and beta tester

I think thats a very good observation. I'd also add that simply because no one's voting for the "It's gotta be pretty" option that Firaxis wouldn't include Secret Project movies for a SMAC(X)2, or at least have the software hooks incorporated into the code in order to insert SP movies into the game for those of us that like to mod.

Well, there again, if Firaxis provides the basic minimum of having software hooks in their hardcoding to enable SP movies in SMAC(X)2, then I'd think they'd definately have the code in place to incorporate the original SMAC(X) movies, if someone chose to do so.

One could hope that the quality of the potential SMAC 2 would be better than that of the questionaire. SMAC was/is a somewhat uniquely satisfying game out of a vast wasteland of largely worthless offerings. While Sid has a much higher than usual batting average, he is not always above half-hearted efforts. It would be extremely disappointing, to say the least, to end up with an inferior product.

That said, there is plenty of room within the original concept for interesting variations and/or extensions which could be viewed as complimenting the original SMAC. For example:

• Multiple planets in addition to Chiron, with and/or without native life as we know it. Factions could develop in even more effective isolation than on different continents; spacefaring chasis would be required to move between planets. Could also kindle some more interest in PlanetBusters too! Remember, there is also Alpha Centauri B for yet another set of potentially different ecologies.
  
• Gameplay could be improved by enhancing the diplomatic possibilities, increasing the allowable number of factions or other arbitrary limits, or utilizing a 'server' (the CMN's machine) to resolve each years turn moves simultaneously based on orders.
  
• Even more liberal use of user-adjustable parameters and 'hooks' to allow for more CMN control of scenarios - perhaps also including hooks to allow user supplied techs, SP's and unit types - and even user-supplied program-modules to standin for factions/players (My Miriam can beat your Santi any day).

Ahh Alpha Centauri. Its story and atmosphere sucked me in like no other game I've come across. I hadn't played for a few years until I came across that poll and Sidquestion a few days ago, now I'm up until three in the morning fighting off the Beleivers I've got an idea (!!) - How about we make plans to create an Alpha Centauri mod of Civ 4?! It sounds like its high modability could make it possible, and the extra features added in civ 3 (culture, resources) and civ 4 (??) could put an interesting new spin on Alpha. Any experienced mod-makers out there interested?

There has been some discussion about this, but no one has actually committed to it yet. I think to a certain extent that a lot of people are taking a "wait and see" attitude towards the project, and that it'll be determined by just how modable Civ IV really is. I guess I'd have to say that I don't plan on buying Civ IV until the general 'poly reviews are firmly established as to what can be modded and what can't.

Also, any SMAC mod would be incomplete without Planet: meaning worm attacks, fungal blooms, sea level raises... Are those possible in Civ4??

Well hopefully when Firaxis recruits some beta-testers, that there'll be a few modders included as well, or at least some SMAC(X)-sters who can try and get a feel for what is possible in a SMAC(X) mod.
Anyways, thanx for the heads-up that a SMAC(X) mod is possible. I'd also say that its been a long time since a Firaxian has posted in the SMAC(X) forums! We thought you guys had lost the links to this place or something!
