Well, I have a fairly long experience of laptops (since 1999), and a long experience on gaming on laptops. My 1999 laptop was high hend (128 Mb RAM), but was still under the idea that a laptop wasn't made for gaming. And as such, the video card sucked horrible (2MB video RAM, whereas 8Mb was the low standard fare on desktops). That's why I couldn't even play Arcanum on that computer.

When I bought my current laptop, in Sept. 2002, every game ran perfectly (GTA3, UT2003, etc), because the laptop makers finally understood that the new audience wants to play games. As of today, it remains an adequate machine for games (I can play X2, Warcraft3, and of course EU2/Vickie without problems), but it begins to show some weakness. If I could change the CPU (the only thing that is really below today's standards), the comp would be kicking.

So, a laptop can be made for games. At least, that's my experience of having my game station on a laptop for years

But then again, my next computer will be a desktop. It's much cheaper for the same bang.

You'd buy one of those ultra cheap Dells? We had one of those in our lab. Ugh....

Your generic hate for Windows doesn't exactly strengthen your case here, especially when Dell machines don't necessarily suck.

Their laptops? Usually, yes, they suck. Their workstations? Not really, in fact, most are quite good...

Why both? Just buy a cheap flat panel ($2-300) a keyboard and mouse ($50) and a 12" Powerbook.

You can use the Powerbook with the keyboard, monitor and mouse as a desktop system and take it with you when you need to.

You don't comprehend my ability to envision fantastic spending sprees.

My iMac is set up on a chic glass desk, free of clutter due to my opting for Bluetooth and AirPort (which along with AirTunes also allows me to play my music library through my home theater system).

Meanwhile, my iBook and iPod would ensure I'm the sexiest man at the cafe through which I'd be wirelessly browsing poly during a break between classes.

This entire lifestyle is of course funded through my pending lawsuit against some multi-billion dollar corporation in which I will be awarded a vast sum of money.

Yes. I had more demanding computing needs than you did, at the time.

Namely, 3d gaming. Which I don't do much anymore.

This was one of the ultra cheap ones. Besides the software, it sucked. I have seen better.

Back in the 90s Dell stuff used to be all good. I wonder what happened.

The Powerbooks don't appeal to me as much, though.

Especially the price

EDIT: Or rather, the price is what keeps me from them.

On the plus side, I've got a small amount of stocks (400 dollars worth or so I bought on a whim) which are expected to do quite nicely, goin from 10-20 dollars above what I bought them at, so maybe I'll have a bit of extra cash.

Luser.

My g4 cube (magic dumpster purchase. go me!) with a few tweaks, such as lots more memory, a new graphics card, and a new hard disk on a chic glass desk, with a 17-inch samsung lcd screen. another two 21-inch samsung lcd screens to the right of the g4, connected to my x86 box, which is sitting under the desk. two keyboards and mice, one for the g4, and the other for the x86; the x86 keyboard/mice would be connected to a kvm switch, which hooks up to my third x86 box, this one nice and small and quiet--my server.

Suffering from ads?

@ Aggie, since he owns a powerbook.

Do you use the touchpad? if so, have you noticed it "wearing out" after a while; that is, the pad becoming worn smooth, so that moving the cursor is a burden? I've encountered this problem with current Toshiba laptop.

Wired mouse works well. Much better than the rest IMO (you can forget about games without a mouse, and should you use wireless mouse, you can forget about not having an insane battery budget )

Prepare your cash then. 2,000 will buy you an acceptable game rig, that will be useless in two to three years, at most.

It it's all the money you saved since you're 12, prepare to save the same amount posthaste, and be prepared to regularily lose all your monies on computers until you really work.

Just buy a budget PC/notebook and Xbox360.

You'll come out several hundred dollars ahead, and have a real gaming platform
