Someone I know gets the employee discount on IBM products.

IBM ThinkPads are the only serious laptops.

iBooks and PowerBooks are shoddy pieces of crap made by Acer and branded Apple. You may as well save a few grand and buy an Acer brand.

There are three fundamental problems with the Apple laptops:
1) One mouse button on the touchpad -- what the ****
2) Lack of a trackpoint -- what the **** -- trackpoint is way, way more efficient and faster and easier once you figure out how to use it and have an IQ > 90
3) It runs MacOS X, one of the most inefficiently resource-hogging OSes out there. Every time you maximize with a fancy genie-in-a-bottle effect, you may as well subtract 1 minute from your battery life.

By the way, my ThinkPad 1.5GHz (from 2003) is roughly three times as fast as my friend's PowerBook (from 2004).

It also lasts three times as long on a full battery charge.

His is made out of thin aluminum and mine is made out of titanium composite.

They cost the same.

As I mentioned earlier, I saw an HP pavilion that actually looked better... though it cost $4-500 more than the ThinkPad I was looking at

OTOH, that ThinkPad had the aforementioned 32MB video card.

And the apple debate is entirely academic, given that this has to be a windows/linux laptop.

Then you won't have a laptop fit for games. Unless things have radically changed in the last 2.5 years. You seem to have plenty of room at home, so don't hesitate to build yourself a desktop that is a gaming rig. It's much cheaper and much more satisfying.

And I continue to say that you'll find a solid working laptop for agreeable price at Toshiba's

Who cares what OS X does? the end result is still that your {x}Book will last you a whole lecture, something that can't be said of most PC laptops.

If you are bringing a laptop to an undergrad lecture, there should be able plugs around so you won't need your battery. If there aren't plugs, then you aren't supposed to bring your laptop... use paper.

Errr... nope. Not all classes are equipped with plugs... and if you have the habit of being late, it's hard to sit next to the wall sometimes.

Actually Centrino laptops last significantly longer than Apple laptops.

My ThinkPad T40 lasts me 8 hours on a single charge. Which is not good for "a lecture" (which is useless to me), but an entire day's worth of lectures.

My friend's PowerBook is about 2 hours.

Similarly, the ThinkPad T40 gets significantly better wireless reception than the PowerBook does thanks to diversity antennas and a more intelligent design.

If it isn't equipped with plugs, then you are not supposed to bring a laptop. If you do, you end up looking like a dork .

Now if the classroom has plugs everywhere, then its accepted to bring a laptop, and you look normal.
