They're complementary.

Though together with a BlueTooth enabled laptop with OneNote, it's pretty close to replacing it.

When a diagram is being drawn, or I draw one to help explain something to people, I'll draw it on my iPaq and then beam it instantly over to my laptop full-screen in OneNote, then we annotate it from there. Painless.

I literally just need to select Beam To -> Killian (name of my laptop) on the iPaq and it gets pasted into OneNote automatically.

You moaned about people liking computers because of their looks and for other reasons you consider impractical, and here you are describing one of the most unnecessary techno w@nks in recent memory.

Of course it's absolutely necessary... but it just happens to be pointless super geeky fun.

Unnecessary? Diagrams and non-alphanumeric typing is not only common in my field, it's extremely common. Drawing with a touchpad or trackpoint is just not how it's done. It's painful, it's inaccurate, it's too slow.

Having a touchscreen and a stylus is damn, damn useful for note-taking.

That is the kind if innovation I look for in PCs -- not crap like Solitaire with a kludgey interface on my iPod, or a 64K-color 2" photo viewer on my iPod.

A lot of people here wouldn't appreciate that kind of innovation, but that's because they're too busy masturbating to the latest iMac G5's "innovative" look and style (nevermind that it's strikingly similar to older PC products).

What about them?

The big news with IBM has yet to come out. It involves Apple and IBM's future.

What an interesting rumour.

Why Intel, are there no other x86 manufacturers out there?

I imagine it will piss some people off, but not me. I don't care what chips they use as long as the OS works.

I suppose they could go with AMD. It would make more sense. AMD seems to be making all the noise lately on the x86 front.

Probably nothing. IIRC they've always had a version of OS X that runs on x86 in case the thing with IBM went nowhere. And it seems it is, since there is no hope of putting a G5 in a notebook.

Apple is really about the end product, so it doesn't matter what parts they use.

I've said for years that Apple was stupid for shuning Intel/AMD in favor of Motorola/IBM.

Motorola's chips lack in performance but have excellent thermal characteristics -- they make embedded products.

IBM's chips are powerful in performance but have hot thermal characteristics -- they make performance, server products.

Intel/AMD make the consumer chips.

Apple's just not big enough to get that special of a chip. For example, IBM has nothing like Centrino or the Pentium M, because they don't need to. Chip design costs are so massive, and Apple's market so small, that it doesn't make sense.

I've been flamed for years from Apple fans about how "RISC > CISC" and how the G3/G4/G5 are fast-son-of-a-*****es and so clearly superior, that it would warm my heart to have Apple switch to x86.

I don't think that has anything to do with it.

Asher can correct me if I'm wrong, but the PPC G5 is just a crippled version of one of IBM's POWER chips for servers IIRC.

It was never designed to go into a notebook, and will probably be too hot to ever go into one. But Apple sells a lot of Powerbooks (people love the things: they are attractive and reliable computers) and really needs a better chip than the aging G4 in them (well - people other than me – I don't need the power).

Hence they are going to have to get a new chip from somewhere. I heard rumours about a version of the G5 for notebooks, and there's all this dual core nonsense, but that's all rumour and will probably come to nothing.

The G3 was a pretty good chip in its day. My machine has a G3 and it has lasted very well.

The G5 is a castrated verion of IBM's POWER4 chip for servers, with a VMX unit (VMX is IBM's name for Altivec, since Altivec is trademarked by Motorola).

The G5 is actually the PowerPC 970 (130nm process), and the most recent version is the PowerPC 970FX (90nm process).

There are dual-core versions of the PowerPC 970FX, but they're still in the engineering sample phase.

There is rumoured to be a low-power version of the PowerPC 970FX for "blade" systems, but I can't say anything more than that.

POWER5 is a much more advanced chip than POWER4, and the vast majority of IBM's engineering work is focusing on that POWER5 and POWER6 families.

For example, Microsoft is paying a pretty dollar for a "crippled" version of the POWER5, but with a vector unit and tri-core.

They'd always used Motorola's chips IIRC. The PowerPC thing was a relic of the Sculley/Spindler/Amelio years, which were the worst years at Apple.

I doubt it. Apple makes most of their money out of hardware, even though their appeal is mainly their software. They are a somewhat old fashioned company – back to the days when manufacturers made the machines and the software than ran them.

But who knows? Maybe Asher does: maybe he's trolling. I do know that it is unlikely that IBM will make a chip for Apple's Powerbooks, and that may well force them to look elsewhere.
