Just watched Conan the Barbarrian Support Apolyton, buy Civilization 2

It had been a long time since I had last seen it. And I know that it has been ~10 years since I read the books.

How similiar are they?

I remember Conan being very harsh. I also remember more magical stuff (in the books). Is the Destroyer any good? How about Red Sonya?

a lot of people don't like Destroyer, but I do. Red Sonja is crap though.

barbarian is still the best though. He only has like 6 words in the entire movie. great acting.

Honestly?

That seems to be in character for the Conan of the books. So I didn't mind that. The pacing was a bit slow at times.

I never read any of the comic books either. I did, however, read everthing (?) by Howard, who is the creator of Conan the Barbarian.

It's been a long while, but I think the movie sticks to the book a lot, except at the end where the arrow was aimed at the girl and not Conan or some such slight difference. But then again, the best would be to re read the book just before (or after) seeing the movie.

Red Sonya sucked. The first two rocked but were very different from the book.

I've read most of the original Howard Conan books... and the first movie was great. While the movie was not taken from a single book, many of the scenes were put together based on different short stories. The theft of the tower was a short story, and his meeting with the witch where she foretells his future was another short story. Many of the other scenes also came from different stories. And yeah, the perfect role for him... look tough, and don't say a heck of a lot.

The first Conan movie is good, if just for James Earl Jones. I think it's solid sword-and-sorcery fare.

The other two mentioned are utter crap.

The movie was based on a book that LeSprague de Camp and Lin Carter collaborated on, called Conan the Barbarian. So it wasn't an origonal Howard creation, but it takes parts from many of conans other stories to create the film/book version.

Everything else Conan based(movie wise) i find really difficult to fit into Robert E.Howards origonal world, also many of the other non-Howard books are pretty dicey.

part of the fun of owning the books was to try to fit them all into correct chroniological order. I seem to remember you could get it about 98% correct.

There's another Conan in pre-production.

Robert Rodriguez was just named the new director after the old one left. WWE Wrestler Triple H was supposed to play Conan, but Rodriguez wants to get Arnie to reprise his role.

The first Conan movie was alright - Conan never would have tolerated that sidekick they saddled him with in the movie. Sans the sidekick it was more-or-less true to the books. Conan the Destroyer was weak, and I never braved Red Sonya.

I love Arnie's movies but he's at least in his sixties and maybe earliy seventies. He's old enough to play Pratchett's Cohen the Barbarian.

Wrong

While L. Sprague de Camp was the technical advisor on the film... the actual screenplay was written by John Milius and Olver Stone. The opening credits state "Based on the Character created by Robert E. Howard. There is no book titled "Conan the Barbarian"

L. Sprague de Camp and Lin Carter (and many others), did create many original stories. But the early books were just them cleaning up the original short stories that Howard had published, and filling in some of the gaps. Only much later after the series became famous, did they actually write original novels...

The theft of the tower in Zamora is from "The Tower of the Elephant."

The speech King Osric gives about the throne room becoming a prison echoes a similar passage in "The Mirrors of Tuzun Thune," a King Kull story.

The scene where Conan is crucified and kills a vulture with his teeth is from "A Witch Shall Be Born."

The scene where Valeria vows to come back from the dead to save Conan and then does so is from "Queen of the Black Coast."

Like the rerelease of his stories in novel form by de Camp and Carter, the movie is just a collection of short stories tied together with a Bunch of original material just for the movie

As a side note, I happen to own many of the old pulp magazines that his original stories appeared in, and I also own all the Lancer First Edition mass market releases that de Camp and Carter put together based on his original short stories and notes he left behind before he killed himself

Too bad that Howard became famous for his work long after his death.

Talking about de Camp and Lin Carter, anyone read the Thongor stories? Are they 'copies' of Conan or were they written before the movie gave Conan his renown?

"Lancer First Edition"

Catchy title.

The flick didn't do much for me. His later movies were much better. I would not have voted for him based on this movie.

Carter wrote the Thongor Novels in the mid and late 60's, but most of the writers back then were doing some kind of sword and sorcrey to pay the bills. The movie didn't come out until 1982. However, the Conan short stories by Howard were some of the early works that helped define this genre of work. The rerelease of his stuff in novel form helped revitalize sales of the entire category.

I happen to own the early Thongor books, as well as most of the other Sword and Sorcery stuff from that era.
