Pacific's first tropical storm could hit Central America, Caribbean

MEXICO CITY -- A tropical depression in the Eastern Pacific was likely to grow into a tropical storm -- perhaps even a hurricane -- that could hit Central America by the weekend, forecasters said Tuesday.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said that Tropical Depression One-E seemed to be on an unusual, early-season path toward the coasts of Guatemala or El Salvador and that it ``could cause torrential rains over Central America.''

By Tuesday evening, the depression already had top sustained winds of 35 mph -- approaching the 39 mph level at which it would become a tropical storm. Forecasters said there was a chance it could reach hurricane strength of 74 mph before hitting land.

The depression's center was located about 470 miles west-southwest of the coast of Guatemala and El Salvador and was headed to the east-northeast at about 5 mph.

The hurricane center said that it could start bringing rain to Central America by Wednesday.

The storm was likely to be weakened by Central America's mountains, but preliminary forecasts suggested it could emerge over the Caribbean as a tropical depression and regain some force while moving toward the Cayman Islands and Cuba.

Most Pacific storms tend toward the northwest, marching roughly parallel to the coastline and then edging out to sea or veering inland.

The center said that since 1966, only one tropical depression has ever hit the coasts of Guatemala or El Salvador in May.

D = tropical depression, basically a strong collection of thunderstorms. They can stregnthen in to tropical storms, which can in turn become hurricanes. Adrian is expected to become a hurricane tomorrow. Crossing over Central Amerian should knock it apart, but who knows.

Aggie, not one of those hurricanes were originally supposed to come near me last year. Three of them did. One of them even hit Florida, dissipated, came back down as a thunder storm and turned back into a hurricane and hit Texas. After last year, I don't make any assumptions where the damn things are gonna go.

I think he was trying to tell us that his name is Adrian, which, as I noted, would be most unusual for a Danish guy, especially of his age.

Now I believe he revealed his last name as well at one time, albeit in a very convoluted way, hinting at its meaning if it were pronounced in German. Long story... but I just tried to tease him a little by suggesting I was on to him, and that I only needed to figure out his middle name.

If you have a car, you do not try and ride out a hurricane. You get the **** out. Only stupid people stay if they can get out. I'm not being flip.

The only people with a valid reason for staying are emergency personal, reporters , those too sick or feeble to move, and those who don't have other means to escape (like me).

Generally speaking, if you have to stay, go to a shelter, don't stay in your building. You never know if your contractor cheated you on building strength. Also, microbursts can flatten many otherwise study buildings. You cannot take pets with you to most shelters, except for assistance animals, though there are shelters that take them.

Don't go near the water, that means rivers and lakes also. Flooding is what kills, not wind.

Here's a list of supplies if you must stay at home.
