DEMO: METROID PRIME-TIME
Nintendo saved the best for last. This was the first section of the GameCube game Metroid Prime 2: Echoes, retrofitted to be compatible with the Revolution controller and its analog add-on piece (the "Nunchaku" set-up mentioned earlier). As on the Cube the analog stick controls movement, but instead of holding down a button to look around, you simply point the other controller in the direction you want to aim.
IMPRESSIONS: At first, I was standing up and swinging my hand all around to aim - and my arms got really tired really quick. But once I sat down and relaxed, resting my hands on my legs as I would with a normal controller, everything clicked. It wasn't perfect yet - the Revolution controller functionality had just been added recently and wasn't bug tested or polished, so every so often the view would "spaz out" for a couple seconds - but it was enough to get me excited. As odd as it may look holding the two separate controller pieces, one in each hand, looking around felt incredibly natural, even more than my preferred PC-style keyboard-and-mouse setup. I have to wonder about precision and speed in multiplayer games, but for a more deliberate single-player game like Metroid Prime - and the series is already confirmed for an appearance on the Revolution - this setup already has huge potential.

Hell yeah.

Dammit, this thing is the goofiest looking controller ever but I can't wait to play around with it.

Well you know I'll give you this

It looks very different

Personally this looks like a good step - controllers have been the same ever since the first NES one, they just cram more buttons on every new release...the XBOX controller was just plain silly IMO.

Seems like this is going to get some good third-party support. EA, Campcom, Ubisoft, and Konami to name a few are all excited about the controller and plan on making games that take full advantage of it.

The same people who make Gamecube games?

Standard PR...of course the companies are going to say they're excited, they have a business relationship with Nintendo.

Ever read a press release before?

Reading more about the device confirms my original opinion.

A gimmick -- it's this generation's light gun. Nifty for a while but quickly forgotten by the players.

Nevermind the difficulties of using the controller as intended in multiplayer games, and nevermind the lack of buttons on the thing...

It could work but it is certainly not fit for the primary controller.

It ought to be a peripheral like a light gun...

While I applaud Nintendo for experimenting...I don't think this will work well. It seems as though the controller is too intrusive into the gaming experience...I don't see being able to really relax with a motion sensitive controller.

I just don't see how you can adequately control a typical game with the small number of buttons that remote has. There's only four and two are so far out of the way as to be worthless in any game that requires quick response times. How are you going to play Metroid with that thing?

Okay after watching the video this has gone from "pretty neat" to "f*cking awesome".

And with a shooter game you essentially have 8 buttons at your disposal: Z1/Z2 on the analog stick, A/B on the main controller, and all four directions on the d-pad.

Enough talk about shooter games.

How does it play NHL games? How would that make sense or be comfortable?

How does it play Football games?

How does it play racing games?

Gimmiccccck (and yes I've seen the video. The dentist was midly amusing...)

Mark my words, and bump this in 2 years time -- the novelty will wear off and what you'll be left with is a downright tiring controller. I'm the kind of guy who slumps back or lays down on the couch when playing console games...

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Lets take football for instance:

How about juking left and right by pulling the controller left and right? Spin moves by twisting the controller? Putting a little extra air under the ball as it's thrown by pulling up on the controller? With the analog module you'd have all the buttons you'd need for gameplay - use the d-pad for selecting plays and the other buttons for actions.

And hey, if that doesn't work there's always the gamecube controller that you can use.

Ixnay, I use stuff like this all the time. I make interactive installation pieces using tech like this, and I've used pieces done by others much better than me. The universal constant with these sorts of things is that people get tired of them. They play with it for a while, go 'oh, that's cool', then move on to something else. An interface that lacks transparency is an absolute killer for interaction. It can work for specific applications (see DDR, though the game is so simple and body-intuitive that the interface can't not work) but it won't have the flexibility to be transparent in a variety of games.
