If "devotion" includes compromising your own fundamental wants and needs and objective well-being, then the line is already somewhere behind you.

Think of it as the Lamborghini auto insurance question - if you have to ask how much the insurance costs, you can't afford the car. In other words, if you're asking where the line is, you're already across it.

what sort of actions would you think are obsessive?

and no im not in a relationship
just thinking .....


is writing a letter every day obsessive or is that just devotion....
is once a week more like friendship?
how many phone calls cross over the line of interest to something else?

i know the apparent things like everyone else..
that show obsession or stalking..
following them , or calling 20 times a day,
or breaking into someones house..
those everyone knows cross the line ..
but what things have happened to you
that made you feel uncomfortable ?

hmm...

of people I don't live with

I send an email, or call my freinds a couple times a year, unless we are doing something together... (I am mostly considering freinds who I dont' live near here...)

I talk to my siblings a few times a year (anywhere from once to a dozen, depending on the sibling)...

I talk to my mom, somehow almost every week

don't really talk to anyone else, and I am not made to feel uncomfortable by anyone...

This reason why this is not a good definition is that a person might be obsessed with a narcissist and they might even crave abuse.

I somewhat disagree with the assertion that the object determines whether or not the subject's attentions are excessive. While true in a legal sense, psychologically the object may be a mess too and crave unhealthy attentions because they are needy or insecure. I would draw the line where the object is no longer seen as a seperate entity, but rather an extension of the subject's own being. This will be tough to see from the inside, but a good psychologist or an insightful person would be able to tell if they were given access to the subject.

Devotion seems to be timeless. Sustainable. Obsession moves on after a while (for both the obsessor and the obsessee) and is not sustainable.

I have a good friend and she obssesses over everything, especially her men

yes men

she clings on to them and scares them away because of this. we (wifey and I) try and tell her this, but her mind is always on her man, even if he is not around

a few months ago she came over so that we would take her to the airport to visit a long lost love, and for a whole day we heard nothing but "I can't believe I am going to see him", "I miss him so much", "I wonder if he's changed much" (she means physically)... Anyway, she went and came back and two days later was on to a new guy who she can't shut up about.

I think you're obsessing if your friends tell you that you need to stop talking about him

if you have no friends

i think the difference is....

obsession is selfish... wants to posess ...wants only what it wants and is unable to see anything but need.
and doesn't care about the feelings of the one obsessed over.

devotion on the other hand... is selfless.. wants the one loved to be happy even at the expense of self.
