This review pretty much sums up "The Rules":
quote:
This book shows little respect for the intellect and individuality of either gender. It IS everything the authors try to claim it is not - manipulation, game-playing, cruelty, being inconsiderate, ad infinitum. |
But here's my favorite review of the book. Read all the way to the end. No peeking!
quote:
After a year of not contacting him and hearing nothing from him after we broke up, I got a card. Two months later I got The Call.
I needed to play it right this time so I bought the book.
I didn't call him, I didn't answer the phone 75% of the time. I waited 24 hours to call or write him back. I was sweet but oh so busy when I talked to him - I was the Prom Queen, I was the most sought-after woman in my city, I had an interesting and fulfilling life.
His calls increased in frequency. I started getting ecards with pulsating hearts and dancing cows and captions like "You are the woman I always dreamed of." All this letting him become hunter was bringing out the primal instinct in him. I could see his testosterone levels rising, his eyes starting to bulge, his brain-power heading south inch by inch. This was good. This was what we wanted.
I ended our calls at 10 minutes. I was always the one to end them. Our dates were over by midnight - I was always the one who had to go. I was feminine, wore bright colors, talked positive, used my Sweet Voice and never nagged him when he wasn't around - oh? I was so busy I didn't notice.
"We want him in a HEAT" I told my girlfriend.
"We want The Ring!" she corrected me.
During this time I happened to watch a documentary on the Homo Sapien species. The fact that it was made BY men made it more interesting than anything else. Men were aggressive, they felt their best when they were using their energy. To overcome fear during hunts and to be able to act with quick decisiveness they have been given an efficient adrenalin system that enables them to focus to the exclusion of anything else once they've chosen their prey. They will gloat about their conquests for years to come, especially after retirement. It is a function of their being, it adds meaning to their lives. When a woman allows herself to be the focus of one of a man's intense pursuits she will indeed become a cherished prize, one he will not let go of for anything, just as the book promises.
With that in mind, I told my doctor, "I'm 48. Give me those collagen shots. I'm back with my boyfriend and I want LEVERAGE."
He said "Women have all the leverage, they just don't know it."
I think he's right. This book shows you how to use it.
One important note:
THIS BOOK ONLY WORKS IMMATURE MEN.
IT WILL NOT WORK WITH THE OTHER .00000000001%

Happily, and sadly, I married a woman with some similarities to my mother, sharing some of her wonderful traits and the traits that contributed to her death (she wouldn't dump the very nice quack who's misdiagnosis/mistreatment killed her). However, what are the traits I would dump/have dumped a woman for (and which I have stupidly/foolishly tolerated in some of my relationships).
1) Plays mindgames in the bedroom.
2) Wants to be taken care of versus being an equal.
3) Doesn't negotiate well, or doesn't follow through.
4) Has double-standards
5) Is not good with children/not interested in them
I really don't care if she doesn't cook, I was cooking for a family of seven by the time I was in 4th grade due to my mother's injuries (when she put out my sister who was burned they could see hand bones). All of our friends like my cooking. However, if I do the cooking, I want some help cleaning up.
I spent several years with a lady, and suddenly realized that if we had kids and I died (always a chance with my family's cardio history) I would NOT have wanted her to raise the child. That pretty much killed the relationship.
I've started off dating some women with double-standards. As soon as I discover that, I drop them like a hotcake. I also loathe people who play manipulative games in the bedroom, it wasn't until my late 20's that I became good at spotting that and getting out ASAP.

I tend to prefer "attractive" to "hot". If she cannot smile or laugh, I'm not interested. The "hot", sultry, sulky look is a massive turn-off for me.

If all else is equal, I would rather be rejected by a pretty woman than a plain woman.
The fear of the pretty popular girl is more in highschool where insecurities and gossip run wild by both genders.

The MSN thing is surprisingly accurate. The first two are bang on, both are things I wouldn't be able to stand. Though I disagree with comment that:
"When you jump right to sex, you skip a lot of the bonding behaviors that intensify a relationship"
My girlfriend and I jumped straight into bed (despite my protestations ) and have kept bonding. We didn't skip the "romantic, electrifying bonding period", because I don't think that's dependant on having sex or not. Sexual tension doesn't need to stop after you've had sex.
Three would also apply to me, but not with money as in the example given. I *love* being taken out and treated, as long as I don't feel inadequate in other ways. It's not a money issue, it's a balance issue - I wouldn't want to date someone who was richer, more intelligent, more attractive, better in bed, etc. all in one, as I'd feel inadequate and intimidated. There needs to be a balance, both of adoring and feeling adored.
Four and five are typical male things that every bloke has a different tolerance for. Yes, being too motherish and moving too fast are bad, but so is trying to keep it casual when emotions are involved and acting like you don't care about someone. It's all about the middle ground - showing you care but allowing independence.
