Archaic World Scenario Full PM-box? Change here!

Okay, so I've been planning this Archaic World (3250 BC - 1000 BC) scenario since Civ3 came out, but never finished, and plan to make it with the more advanced Civ4.

Ideas:

Civilizations:
Sumer
Akkad
Elam
Hatti/Hittites
Amurru/Amorites
Canaan
Salem/Proto-Hebrews
Mitanni/Hurrians
Eteo-Crete/Minoans
Achaia/Mycenae
Ilium/Troy
Upper Egypt
Lower Egypt
Nubia
Indus Valley/Harrappans
Caucasus/Aryans
Xia Dynasty
Shang Dynasty
Zhou Dynasty
Koryo/Choson
Nippon/Jomon
Olmecs
Tuatha de Danann

Religions:
Mesopotamian Myth.
Egyptian Myth.
Greek Myth.
Hebrew Monotheism
Chinese Myth.
Hinduism/Vedicism
Animism?

Wonders:
Tomb of King Scorpion, Abydos, Egypt
"Sargon's War Academy", Akkad
Tower of Babel, Babylon
Labyrinth, Knossos, Crete
Djoser's Step Pyramid, Saqqara, Egypt
the Pyramids, Giza, Egypt
Giant Olmec Heads, Mesoamerica
Walls of Jericho, Canaan
Palace of Minos, Knossos, Crete
Rig Veda/the Vedas/Mahabharata/Bhagavad Gita India
Stonehenge, Britain
Ziggurat of Ur, Sumer
the Epic of Gilgamesh, Sumer
the Ramayana, India
the Lion Gate (of Mycenae), Greece
Travels of Abraham, Hebrews
Ruins of Sanxingdui, China
the Sphinx
Hammurabi's Code
Palace of the Yellow Emperor
Royal Tombs, Anyang
the Temple of Solomon
Dar Kurizgalu (Kassite Capital)
the Sea Peoples
Temple of the Goddess, Catal Huyuk
Abu Simbel
Hanging Gardens
Trojan Horse
Ebla Tablets
Archives of the King of Mari
Harappa Citadel
Agriculture of Shen Nong
Seahenge
Sacred Temple of Amon-ra, Karnak

I'm working on compiling city lists, technological advances, wonders, unique unit ideas, etc.

Any suggestions are most certainly welcome. Please?

Interesting idea. I'm always more enthusiastic about scenarios that focus on building a civilization than about war scenarios

OTOH, since Civ traditionally doesn't represent the archaic era very well, there are a few challenges that appear, and that you may want to tackle:
1. The spread of mankind. Basically in Civ, mankind can be found only where the Civs start, and the Civs are the ones responsible for settling the world. However, once a Civ creates a city, the city is firmly in the hands of its creator. I'm not an expert, but I don't think it happened like that in the archaic era: new settlements (at least those far from the centre) took their independance, and the established empires actually unificated many small kingdoms into their culture. I really like the way you divided China

Another problem with the Civ engine is exploration. Since the worldmap shouldn't be too big, the Civs can explore like crazy, and you could well have Greeks that trade techs directly with the Chinese. Do you have ideas on how to seriously restrict exploration? Maybe a handy number of Barbarians in "barrier" regions would help.

Another thing is the role of the mediterranean trade, and the relative unattractiveness of Northern Europe. Maybe the Mediterranean arc should be chock-full of resources (in comparison to Europe's, at least), and maybe you could mod the rules so that irrigation on European tiles produce less food than irrigation on mediterranean ones.

The last thing is about the barriers not to exploration, but to colonization. In particular, Africa could end up being full of Nubian towns. Maybe you should mod many terrains so that they don't even allow for the passage of settlers. The African jungle could be a good barrier to the Nubians then, Siberia wouldn't be a passage between Europe and Asia, etc.

I am not sure an archaic scenario should feature all these civs or play on a world map. Something bigger than Kull's Seeds of Greatness could be ok (the Mediteranean and up to India), but including Mesoamericans? Fertile crescent civs and americans won't meet in hte Archaic period.
And the Tuatha De Danaan are probably better replaced by celts, the Tuatha De being the name of the old Irsh gods.

Pretty much. The refugees then gradually lose contact with each other and what technology they had. This would then bring us up to the scenario start.

It is theorized that the Tuatha De were deified heroes from a previous civ that the Irish supplanted. Demigods = legendary past heroes...?

And I'd need a really large map in order to do this...

Yeah the idea was that by the end of the game, one faction wouldv'e achieved dominance in each area

(ex. Sumer, Akkad, Elam, Mitanni coallesce into Assyro-Babylonia; Upper and Lower Egypt and part of Nubia make the Old Kingdom, etc.)

BTW, I agree that you should remove the American continent altogether. It will allow you to have more Eurasian Civs (I imagine India and southern China could have more), and it will let you have a bigger Eurasian map, thus making exploration less easy, as well as faraway wars.

I also suggest that the southern end of the map should be around the African jungle (well, maybe the SE-Asian Jungle), so that there's no room for undue Nubian expandion or undue southern Chinese expansion

I thought about doing such a mod as well; it was going to be an "Ancient Mediterranean" mod though.

No Japan, China, etc.

Just 4000BC to 400 AD. Sumer, Akkad, up through and including the Romans.

There are enough Civ3 units like chariots and horse archers out there that you could just about "plug them all in" and get a decent ancient med mod right now.

For southern China, I can only find the Thais. But there seems to have been a bronze-age culture somewhere in north of todays' Vietnam. It's referred to as 'Van Lang'

For south-India, I found some reference that pottery of the Banas-culture spread out south after 1800 BC.

On Elam, your leader should be Shutruk Nahunte, he who stole the steele of Akkad.

And, instead of animism, you MUST put in Zoroatrianism. look it up. It's the oldest surviving religion in the world (even older than Judaism)

Zoroaster lived circa 800-700 BC. The scenario ends at 1000 BC. For a later game, he'd be perfect.

(BTW, no need to look Up Zoroastrianism -- wrote a nice bunch of papers on Z.)

"According to a classic legend, Korea's first large social civilization, Go-Joseon (고조선; 古朝鮮, was founded by the man-god Dangun (Tangun) in 2333 BC. Go-Joseon is considered the first Korean kingdom. The name originally used was Joseon (meaning "Land of the Morning Calm"), but later historians started calling it Go-Joseon, or "old Joseon", to distinguish it from the later Wiman Joseon and Gija Joseon (see below). The legend claims that the kingdom was founded by Dangun in southern Manchuria in the basins of the Liao and Daedong Rivers.

In 1122 BC, a kingdom called Gija Joseon was established when a Chinese exile Jizi (Gija) led 5,000 followers to the mountainous peninsula and founded the kingdom by merging with existent populations. Go-Joseon was later revived as Wiman Joseon, which lasted until 108 BC. It has become common to refer to Wiman Joseon, Gija Joseon and the initial Go-Joseon as parts of a longer Go-Joseon period, this time to distinguish them from the later Joseon Dynasty."

Encyclopedia Entry. (above)

I know that Wang Kon flourished AD 877-943, but that's not the culture I'm referring to.

The reason the egyptians have so many wonders is because they had the longest un-interrupted civilization in the history of mankind. Egyptian civilization ran from before 3000BCE to 326BCE. And if you count that egypt retained much of its culture and soveriegnty through the hellenistic period, it goes all the way to 44BCE. Also, roman tradition was influenced by egyptian, and the standard egyptian culture flourished in the southern parts of the nile, It goes all the way to 653 CE, when it was conquered by the Arabs.
In conclusion, you should remove the tomb of King Scorpion (it was just a tomb, and not a wonder), and the "Pyramids" (which were built very late in this period), and leave only Djoser's step pyramid, and the sphinx. You could consider putting in the Most Sacred Temple at Karnak, which, IMO, is the most impressive building in egypt.

While I think it is a good idea to include the Temple of Karnak, I do not agree that the Pyramids of Giza should be removed. Are you aware that the Great Pyramid of Khufu was constructed in the 26th Century BC, and the Temple at Karnak in the 16th?

Also, I think the Tomb of King Scorpion should stay. While it is not as impressive as later, more massive edifices, it represented the beginning of Egyptian ceremonial burial, early hieroglyphics, and other cultural achievements.

P.S. Why remove the Pyramids and keep the Sphinx? Most Pyramids predate the Sphinx, ie. those at Saqqara, Dahshur, Meidum, and most of the complex at Giza. Or do you think it was built by extra-terrestrials?
