When we get the first save - your Opinions Inflate your Upload Space

When we get the first save, we want to play our save as fast as possible. I know that we won't exactly know when we will get the first save, we might be last in line and each of the other teams might take their Maximum 24 hours for each of their first turns. This might present a problem, with some of our US members, as it will be Holiday weekend (3 day) and they might not be available to provide their Input.

So, what are your Opinions on things like Starting Locations, Poping Huts with workers (if close to us - but taking time from very early worker actions), Scouting with workers for better Starting Locations, How far do we want to move, if we don't like our initial start, etc, etc, etc.

What are your views on these and more, for different things that we might see when we DO actually get our first save? Please give some scenarios and Options for each of them. Maybe even some things from games that you have played (and how you would have started them differently).

It's so hard to say ahead of time what I think we should do without actually seeing what our start position is. There are many factors to consider, much of which are set in stone once you see what your start looks like.

The admins should run through the first round & take a pic of everyones starting position, and distribute it to the teams.

That will give everyone time to discuss our first moves before we get the turn.

If we have the Admins do a -1 turn (or zero turn, whatever) for the sole purposes of setting the Passwords, that would be good to have. They can just mod the game to start at 4050BC, set passwords, take screenshots and send them to the various teams.

Although, the first team wan't need that, as they should be getting the first save right after they do that as it is. But it will allow the other teams to make some form of desision before they get their turn.

But anyways, this thread is to discuss esoteric strategies, with different kind of starts. It's not just about what we can see and maybe see, but what we WANT to see and what we will settle for.

It's about, what our first build(s) might be, what we want to think about researching, what if any Huts that we might want to pop or maybe wait on (for possible culture expansion).

A lot of things. But mainly, to get us into the mode of starting our play in about 1 weeks time.

H_E has a good point. The admins do not have to set the passwords. They do the pass through and supply screen shots from a copy of the sav other than the one that is given to team 1.

Help yourself to an AD-FREE life

DO NOT pop a hut on our first turn, even if we decide to found our city on the spot we start.

Why?
If we do, we would eliminate the possibility of a free settler. The only time that you can get a free settler is if you have equal to or less than the number of cities as the rest of your opponents and if you do not have a settler in the build queue (or already built). If we found our capital and one of the other teams didn't found theirs (we can check by looking at the f7 screen), or their are teams yet to play their first turn, then we eliminate the possibility of a free settler altogether. For this same reason, I am against popping a hut with our worker.

Don't pup huts on the first turn. Unless necessary to found on/work the tiles we want.

Well, the admins could post us the start of turn screen shot we'd get to speed things along.

Actually, I have a set of heuristics on what to do on a blind map:

1. Don't shift from access with fresh water to a non-fresh water acess tile.

2. If one tile away from fresh water access -> shift to fresh water

3. If on a food or shield bonsus, shift off that tile.

4. If one tile away from the ocean generly shift to either on the coast or two tiles away.

5. If on the ocean, generaly do not shift off the ocean.

That would leave three cities, and only one worker. IMO, I don't think that's a very good starting move.

As we will be Agri, we will already have Pottery researched. I like to put out scouting Units, but I like to get an idea of my local terrain at first, to get a very good idea as to where I'll be placing cities.

And as for Granaries, they are your friend, but not too soon, either. Building them also gives your city a chance t get a better Pop Base with which to crank out those Settlers. Ideally, you want to get 4 turn settlers, as you can reallistically have 2 turn Growth with Granaries and you just bounce back and forth between pop levels. But then, realistically, you have to put some other builds in between the Settlers as your Growth rate might not be as much as you want it to be, so you need to put other builds in to allow your pop to recover between the settlers.

And very early Barracks can be a waste (Unless your Mil Trait), but then, that should atleast one of the first builds from our second city.

But 3 EW's are good to start out with. Afterwards, we will have to wait to see what we can find when we get there.

exploring at start (mostly some warrior's) is the most valuable way.
(goody huts/fast contact = with all the advantages and option it give/knowing the others land and they don't know where you are and so on...)
And if possible don't use UU for explore or the first contact maybe trigger your GA :/.

We will need to see the start. But I agree with jon's principles. In the short term, the big question will be to build a granary or not as our first major build. I often build a second city and then do the granary in one or both. Also, with an ag civ, and depending on the satrt location and food production, you maye get a similar effect without building the granary (then again - you could make it even better with one. )

It is to dependant now to make an informed decision as to the setter or granary first.

A lot will depend on just how fast our first city is growing, and just what the city sites around it are like.

If the starting location is fertile, but has low production, then go direct for the settler.
If the starting location has high production, but low food, then go granary.

Also, what is our happiness like? If we delay and make the city grow to size 5 to produce a granary, but this causes unhappiness, is it worth waiting?

All these are questions that we need to see the save to make an accurate decision on. And then, not only do we need the save, but we need to explore the area around the first city as well and find our 2nd and 3rd city sites to make a rational decision as to how to proceed with rex.

My typical example above is just that, typical. It is what I would normally plan on doing, but it has to be modified and adapted to fit the specific circumstances of our situation. And until we see the save and know what our situation is, let’s not worry to much about it.

Agreed. We need to find out what our start is like, not to mention what our first warriors reveal as potential sites around the capitol.

Most certainly. The lux slider is 100% efficient when you only have a single small city at the beginning, so the only reason not to use it is if you can't get back down from the pop you climb to without lots of intentional food shortage. And if worse comes to worse, worker builds can usually take care of that.

We probably want a minimum of 2 starting Warriors / Eniku Warriors. Exact count depends upon the food and shield situation. First non-Warrior / Eniku Warrior in the capital should probably be a granery; we'll start with that tech.

On what to reserach first, we will definately have Pottery to start with, and all three choices give us access to a second level tech, which we know no one else starts with.

But if we get Summerians, Bronze Working will look mightly attractive as a first tech. Knowing where the Iron is located is always good, even if we delay hooking it up.

If we get Irq or the Dutch, Writing will look attractive for the shear number of techs it opens up.

I would go for Wheel, as that will give us an idea as to where we can find Horses. With one civ being Iroqouis, we wil need the option of maneuverability to be able to compete.

Another is Warrior Code. THis will give us a 20 su unit, which we won't have with EW's. Take it from me, sometimes you want those 20 su's to get a more efficient usage of shields. It will also give us an Offensive punch, especially if someone wants to PI$$ us off and trigger our GA very early.

That was my first idea, too.
But we are the only science civ so we are the only civ with bronze-working from beginn.

Technologies that no one starts with:

Warrior Code & The Wheel.

If we want an oppertunity to have techs to trade AND to try for our first SGL, we should go for either (or both) of these, first. By the time we get them, we should have contact with at least 1 civ (hopefully).
