A shame....a lot of the excitement has now gone out of the game with 2 players committing suicide

I don't think either of the players committed suicide - they had no chance of surviving when they retired.

Unless of course by 'suicide' you mean the alliance they formed as soon as they met in-game.

Had there been an ally alive I would have played the few remaining turns just to buy him time. There wasn't so I retired.

The last turn I lost two of my largest producers and my iron city. My defensive lines were ripped open and my total lack of fastmovers made sure any attempt of retaking territory woul be an exercise in futilty as my slow troops just would have been slaughtered in the open. I still had options, but none that would make any sense towards me winning this game. The least stupid option was to gather all remaining forces and march east into aquas territory. Not exactly a winning move so I just quit.

I'm not sure who's opinion is worth what, but I would have seen no problem with that. If you felt betrayed by an ally in the game and sought vengence with your dying breath, that would be a bit of roleplaying and hopefully keep any ill will contained to the game.

What is a lot more sketchy is to quit the game in order to spite an enemy. It seems very uncharacteristic of a civilization to commit Harry Carry to deny another an advantage. It tends to make the game's decisions seem personal. I don't think anyone here is going to put a hit out on someone else, but IMO keeping such a nominal roleplaying element goes a ways to keep 'baggage' from being carried outside the game.
