These and other beliefs are so strong in fact, that one will never in his life voluntarily jump from a building, although it would save considerable time and possibly provide entertainment too.

Yes, I know that fire burns. But fire (and heat in general) is also a useful tool. I cook with it daily, and occasionaly suffer a burn from distraction or carelessness. I've been burned from accidentally touching the exhaust manifold of my chainsaw, but I don't foreswear the use of it.

I have also hiked a high mountain and sat on the edge of a 3500'+ cliff. The view was stupendous. No postcard or even mural can convey the sense of being there. Yes, I was careful around the edge. The experience is energized by the faint danger of falling.

My roommate has jumped out of an airplane. It is my intent to do the same some day. This is done with the protection of a thin piece of cloth attached by strings. We have faith in certain principles (aerodynamics) that counter the danger of falling from such a height.

quote:
On the other hand, breaking religious rules is supposed to also hurt you very badly, in fact, if you sin you are supposed to endure unimaginable pain and suffering forever.

Here is a list of seven deadly sins in Catholicism, I bet other religions have similar lists:
...

I do believe in God. I don't believe in Roman Catholicism. Neither I nor RCism posits that committing these sins leads to "unimaginable pain and suffering forever." RCism teaches that these sins lead to purgatory, which is temporary rather than eternal.

quote:
I myself am a Catholic. But I must say that in my life I haven't met a person whose behavior is consistent with his professed religion, except perhaps priests. Importantly, note that I am not talking about full compliance with religious code, I am talking about sincerity of professed belief. As I have explained, it can be easily observed that people don't really believe in religious teaching. At all.

For example, not a single person will post in this thread and say they sincerely believe - because consuming internet forums is hardly a necessity - and doing so would burn your hand.

I don't follow your logic. Doing something that is "[not] a necessity" would "burn your hand?" The example of burning one's hand is an immediate, physical feedback that stimulates a reflex preservation response. Doing something wrong incurs immediate feedback only from the conscience, which has no hard-wired preservation reflex attached to it. The supposed "burning" is a delayed judgment, again no comparison.

Whenever there is a delay in either gratification or punishment there are always those who act only on the basis of immediate results.

The second issue is the difference between belief in God and belief in religious rules. The distinction is blurred in the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church, some would say to a much greater degree than most Protestant denominations. I'll just leave it at that.

The third issue is one of qualification. You say, "I myself am a Catholic. But I must say that in my life I haven't met a person whose behavior is consistent with his professed religion, except perhaps priests."

I must ask what experience you have with adults who attend and serve in other churches. If your exposure is confined to the RC church, or fellow students who largely attend church at the behest of parents, then your sample may be deficient. In that case it is up to you to expand your sample.

I believe in my God/the Creator. But at the same time, I understand that the Creator likes variety and knew that not everyone agree's and therefore he took many forms to communicate with everyone here, hence all the different religions on the planet.

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Amen.

this is the creed which is said at mass. It is a very beautiful prayer

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven. By the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father [and the Son]. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

No the logical explanation is religion presents ideals which we strive after. All major religions do this.

How would you know? Only God knows the heart and soul of person. This is why judgement is reserved for God alone.

As for hell, the traditional belief is God doesn't send people to hell. They send themselves through their actions and unbelief.

An excellent summary of the teaching of God and Jesus Christ.

What is most important is what God teaches and NOT what people think about religion. God teaches that there is only ONE way to heaven, that being through his Son Jesus Christ. Any religion or belief system that does not teach this will lead its adherents to eternal punishment in hell.

Folks, with all due respect I didn't ask you if you believe in God or not.

I have claimed that it is easy for a neutral observer to prove that you don't simply by reading about your religion and observing your behaviour.

Part of being human is behaving inconsisently with whatever belief we have -- in other words, much to your shock Vet, none of us are perfect.

Every now and then in human history, we come across individuals who are very exceptional, and come extremely close to being 100 percent consistent with his/her belief.

"The fool says, in his heart, There is no God." Psalm 14.1

There are 3 elements of the biblical understanding of atheism or Godlessness.

Firstly, Godlessness is equated with foolishness.

Secondly, it is of the heart, a sentiment rather than rational conclusion (contrary to everything atheists say).

Thirdly it is "said", in other words Godlessness is a faith, just like a religion, which is affirmed by the believer (which explains the evangelical side of so many atheists).

Ah, I'm not one of those people that try to push his/her own beliefs on others...now THAT is wrong. That, and I'm not really a Western religion person so things aren't as black-and-white for me.

Pushing one's own (religious/spiritual) beliefs on others is probably the worst things a person can do. All this "Love thy Neighbor" is B.S. Why? Because it usually turns into "Love thy Neighbor...so long as they believe in the same thing you do. If not, then BURN THEM!!!" Total nonsense b.s.

I say it doesn't matter what one believes, so long as decency and respect for one another prevails.

Have you ever considered it is a psychological phenomenon than anything real? Brainwashing is amazingly powerful and the unscrupulous peddler of religion has exploited this loophole of the human mind for millennia...shame really as now we have the tools to see them for the barren liars they are.

that was my point

agnosticism is the more intellectually defensible position for the unbeliever. To deny the possibility of God is idiotic and ignores all evidence.

There are more stars in the universe than there are grains of sand on the seashore but provost says there is no God. Its like a bacteria in a petrie dish declaring there are no scientists.
