Being American, I value it.
I don't value it to piss of my British friends, who were way removed from the event, nor to debate Lincoln and a war not even identified with the meaning of the 4th of July, as relates to Americans.

But I should have known it would be slanted to one of the two things you are manic about, whether it fits or not, whether it's fact or not.

The concept was still alive and well during most of the 18th century, Imran. I assume you mean the Enlightenment as opposed to the Reformation? The US was the first government to be structured along the ideals of the Enlightenment.

Google "Great Hanging" and Gainsville, TX. They were lauded for this mass lynching in the state - the high quality of confederate supporters.

France was an absolute monarchy before its own revolution happened in the 1780s and 1790s.

Prussia was also a monarchical state. Great Britain was the European nation that had a form of monarchical government that relied much less on the idea of "divine right of monarchs." But the "divine right of monarchs" existed through the 1830s.
