I know there's a "Wish list" thread already, but I think this topic is important enough to warrant its own thread.
Okay, so what kind of graphics do you want for Alpha Centauri 2? Other than the normal sorts of improvements, such as higher resolution, more colours, etc.
Do you want 3D? Do you want more eye candy or servicable graphics? Do you want, for example, the ability to rotate the map?
Other than the "look and feel," what other new functions do you want? For example, pointing the mouse pointer at a base will bring up a nice little information panel.
What about the user interface? What kinds of improvements can you think of, given a higher resolution (1024x768)?
How about making your own custom "skin" and faction sets?
What do you think about an optional Civ I look (i.e. looking straight down)? A high resolution version can make this an attractive, light weight alternative.

I was going to say that in the wishlist thread, even though it seemed small; we should be playing on a PLANET, not a 2 dimensional wraparound, it woudl increase the tactical complexity to have to deal with a plante thats actually ROUND.

I did like what I saw of the cIV screen pics as far as the animation was concerned, as well as the general layout of the terrain (i.e. how it was represented).

50% of the voters at the currrent Firaxis poll said "who cares about graphics". Eye candy is nice, gameplay is paramount! From a Creator's perspective it would be neat to be able to insert new terrain graphics and be able to customize what they mean to the game. So say instead of (or in addition to) the Unity Wreckage say you were able to insert a graphic for an ancient abandoned city, which had a working observatory (which tracked the descent and landing of all the Unity's Escape modules), a couple of serviceable units, and a cache of EC's. Similar analogies could be made for other current landmarks in the game.
Regardless, whatever graphics are used, why please make them easily modable.

That when a war starts/ ends, or other major event happens, that the pop-up text have more flair to it. Say something like a pull-up CNN style screen that has all the headlines of the day, with whatever the major event was emblazoned across the top of the screen along with whatever other info is known at the moment. Subsections on the webstyle page would then have been customized to other events of the day, for instance:
- Drones at Base X become resistant to nerve stapling!
- Rumours of ancient civilization on Planet!
- Researchers at Base Y make major breakthru!
The player could then opt to click on these links for a full "article-style" op-ed if they so chose. From a Creator's perspective why if these files were then imprinted onto created SP games, why they could then be customized by Creator's for SP Challenges, which would add a new dimension of fun to players, for when these news events occur, why players would never know what to expect when they pulled up a certain link as to what the Creator may have inserted into the file!

As far as a "custom skin" is concerned, are you refering to giving the skin more of a feel for the Faction your playing? So say if it was a Morganite Faction that a player could make it look more pretty, or a Gaian payer could give it a skin that is more in touch with nature? That'd be kinda cool!
As far as custom Faction set are concerned why I think the community in general would be leary of adding new customized faction sets to PBEM. However from a Creator's perspective they can add significantly to gameplay. A very good example of that would be Chaos Theory's 2005 Solstice Challenge .

Lightweight (from a processor intensive perspective) would probably be a good option for those not using high end platforms. It would broaden the player base.

Hmmm, or how about some graphics like these:
quote:
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - A U.S. media watchdog group denounced the maker of the hugely popular video game Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas on Friday over graphic sexual content that allegedly exists in the game and can be unlocked with an Internet download.
The game's plot is already objectionable to many people: its main character carjacks for fun and profit and picks up women along the way.
But some say its content becomes sexually explicit if players download and install a modification to the game - one of many so-called "mods" available on websites maintained by video game enthusiasts.
"While San Andreas is already full of violent behaviour and sexual themes, the pornographic sex scenes push it over the edge," said David Walsh, founder of the Minneapolis-based National Institute on the Media and the Family, which issued a "nationwide parental alert" Friday.
The controversy has prompted an investigation by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board, which determines the rating on every video game sold. Rockstar Games issued a statement Friday, confirming the investigation and avoiding comment on whether its programmers created the sex scenes in the first place.
"We also feel confident that the investigation will uphold the original rating of the game, as the work of the mod community is beyond the scope of either publishers or the ESRB," the company said.
The mod's author - Patrick Wildenborg, 36, of Deventer, Netherlands - said Friday his code merely unlocks content that is already included in the code of each off-the-shelf game.
"If Rockstar Games denies that, then they're lying and I will be able to prove that," Wildenborg wrote in an e-mail.
"My mod does not introduce anything to the game. All the content that is shown was already present on the DVD." |
Regardless of whether Wildenborg simply uncovered existing lines of code in the game or inserted seperate, new files into his mod, why I'm sure all of the gaming companies are now talking to their lawyers about the implications of this legal situation. And of course I'm sure their grilling all their programmers as we speak, "OK, for the last time, are you sure you didn't put any hidden porno scenes into our upcoming game release?" :nervous:
Finally, on a seperate note, why for all the mod'ers out there, what sort of legal limbo could it throw these people into, if Wildenborg is then sued over this? And can sites where mod'ers post their work to, can these sites be sued as well if a mod is found to be "objectionable" by some watchdog group, because the site allowed the work to be uploaded to it?
Flubber - you could make a career out of consulting on this!

A very big change to the game however. Having a safe flank at the pole makes for easier security but North South navigations would be arguable a fairer way to go

From the perspective that it keeps all 14 factions from both SMAC and Expantion, all the base construction, terraformin, tech, and diplomatic flexability:
I would change the flat system to 3D
Greatly Improve the graphics
Include many new camra options, but default is old system over head with added NSEW angle changing, while still able to use more advansed angles every now and then.
I would give more options of what to say and do in the deplomacy windows. For example, if I don't want to threton a faction member that I have so and so tech and ability, I can choose not too, rather then the system automaticly make me and the NPC make a retilitory remark of "Don't presume to threaten me with your (whatever)"
And I would also allow all 14 playable factions to play on the map, and have multiplayer able to support 14 players.
