Explosion heard in London - political part Support Apolyton or Terrorists Win

* I must say, it's heartening that politics has *mostly* been kept out of this thread.

As Kuci has stated in the other thread and I quite agree - Let's keep that thread available for hard info about the situation and polys residing in the area, and try to bash each other about political issues here.

I too agree with Molly that the only sane response is to carry on living life as normal. Local news has made a check into people has been frightend to go to London, but there has only been a couple of cancellations and they couldn't descide wether they were caused by the bombs or just was natural causes. In fact, it should be safer to go to London than stay here - according to that statement from the socalled AQ faction, we should be the next target together with Italy.

I must admit in all the sorrow I also had a pair of good laughs reading the other thread - blaming it upon the selection of London as olympic city in 2012 almost took me out - one thing is to be mad over loosing such a "game", but to imagine that any french should be capable to organize such an attack in 24 hours - impossible .

Same goes for the G8 reason - the protestors might destroy property, and if it was a MacD or a bank that was blown up, then it probably was their work, but not subways or busses.

The real culprits are most certainly extreme islamists. A DR correspondent in London has been out talking with people in the area of one of the explosions - he called it Londonistan (Londoners, is that his own invention or are there an area called that ?) - mostly populated by muslims, and everyone he talked with agreed that it was done by maniacs.

Some has stated that this bombing is a battle won by those who did it, but I disagree - it's more like a sniper that has made a hit, and now search teams are out looking for him. It is difficult to prevent such things in that kind of society we live in and I don't think that any of us want to live in a society where it would be easy to prevent it .

The crazy thing is that those who did it really belives that it will have any effect, especially in britain - after all, the IRA bombings didn't have any effect.

A lot could hinge on whether the bombers were illegal immigrants, legal immigrants, asylum-seekers or full citizens (by no means impossible).

The number of Muslim victims could also be important... there were probably quite a few.

Same for danish and italian since we might be the next.

Personally I think that the possibility here is lower since we don't have very many places they could hide and prepare for it.

I wonder why Al-Qaeda waited so long to hit Britain? I wonder if their resources aren't so thinly stretched that they're having trouble putting missions together?

Does it really take that much in the way of a hideout for someone to leave a small bomb on a commuter train?? I would imagine its only a matter of getting the necessary materials together and then anyone could carry it while looking like any student or tourist

Yes I think too. Their network was weakened considerably it seems. Their training camps got blown up and it's hard to find countries that provide shelter since Afghanistan.
I also heard they don't actively recruit anymore but rather take people that run to them and the number of terrorist cells has increased while the connections between them have decreased.
Ofc this is still dangerous, but as we can see in London, this was probably the weakest attack so far. It was either planned and carried out in a hurry or they don't care so much about maximum destruction anymore.

You got me wrong - of course there are a lot of places to hide a bomb in trains and buses - what I meant was that there are not much community where people could prepare and organize it.

Avatar Enlargement: We've got the solution

Don't think there'll be much effect in the long term. They might get the ID cards through a bit easier now, but that's probably it. Only thing that would effect things if these explosions start happening an awful lot more (say every few days in different towns).

And you underestimate the ease which with you can get relatively efficient explosive, I mean you don't need military grade plastique. One person with a few sportsbags and some fuses could've probably done the whole thing this morning by himself.

quote:
Israel Warned United Kingdom About Possible Attacks

Summary

There has been massive confusion over a denial made by the Israelis that the Scotland Yard had warned the Israeli Embassy in London of possible terrorist attacks “minutes before” the first bomb went off July 7. Israel warned London of the attacks a “couple of days ago,” but British authorities failed to respond accordingly to deter the attacks, according to an unconfirmed rumor circulating in intelligence circles. While Israel is keeping quiet for the time-being, British Prime Minister Tony Blair soon will be facing the heat for his failure to take action.

Analysis

The Associated Press reported July 7 that an anonymous source in the Israeli Foreign Ministry said Scotland Yard had warned the Israeli Embassy in London of possible terrorist attacks in the U.K. capital. The information reportedly was passed to the embassy minutes before the first bomb struck at 0851 London time. The Israeli Embassy promptly ordered Israeli Finance Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to remain in his hotel on the morning of July 7. Netanyahu was scheduled to participate in an Israeli Investment Forum Conference at the Grand Eastern Hotel, located next to the Liverpool Street Tube station -- the first target in the series of bombings that hit London on July 7.

Several hours later, Israeli Foreign Minister Silvan Shalom officially denied reports that Scotland Yard passed any information to Israel regarding the bombings, and British police denied they had any advanced warning of the attacks. The British authorities similarly denied that any information exchange had occurred.

Contrary to original claims that Israel was warned “minutes before” the first attack, unconfirmed rumors in intelligence circles indicate that the Israeli government actually warned London of the attacks “a couple of days” previous. Israel has apparently given other warnings about possible attacks that turned out to be aborted operations. The British government did not want to disrupt the G-8 summit in Gleneagles, Scotland, or call off visits by foreign dignitaries to London, hoping this would be another false alarm.

The British government sat on this information for days and failed to respond. Though the Israeli government is playing along publicly, it may not stay quiet for long. This is sure to apply pressure on Blair very soon for his failure to deter this major terrorist attack.

I'll say it. The attacks were successfull. They showed that they will continue. The current effort to prevent further attacks is a failure. Let's talk about the causes.

I intentionally deleted the last line of my response in the topped thread to put it here.

It was.

And to the perpetrators...after the mourning, we'll find you.

That sums up my political feelings on the subject.

If we packed up and left them to their swealtering sandbox tomorrow, it would not matter.
