Soemthing new for the weapons freaks Support Apolyton, buy Galactic Civilizations

I was doing some research on a company called ATK which looked like a good investment when I came across this fascinating gadget.

quote:
XM25 Air-Burst Assault Weapon
The XM25 air-burst assault weapon is a next-generation, semi-automatic weapon system designed for effectiveness against enemies protected by walls, dug into foxholes, or hidden in hard-to-reach places.

The XM25 provides the soldier with a 300 to 500% increase in hit probability to defeat point, area, and defilade targets out to 500 meters. The weapon features revolutionary high-explosive, air-burst ammunition programmed by the weapon's target acquisition/fire control system.

The XM25 integrates ballistics computation in the full-solution Target Acquisition/Fire Control (TA/FC) system. The soldier places the aim point on target and activates the laser rangefinder. The fire control system provides an adjusted aim point. The soldier places the adjusted aim point on target and pulls the trigger. Target information is communicated to the chambered 25mm round. As the round speeds down range, it measures the distance traveled and bursts precisely at the distance preprogrammed.

The XM25 precisely delivers air-bursting munitions in all conditions, including MOUT and complex terrain. It is five times more lethal at the M203 maximum range and continues to provide lethality well beyond the M203's maximum ability. The system is designed for optimum performance at 300 meters but will perform to 500 meters and beyond.

It includes five different types of ammunition:

Thermobaric
Flechette
Training
High Explosive Air Bursting
Non-Lethal

Let me get this straight: the bullets have their own guiding system and compensate for a bad aim? The munitions must be ****ing expansive.

That's right. I think you'd be better of with training the gun usage more than getting these fancy guns and weapons. Cheaper and at the end more effective.

The munitions are unguided. They just measure the distance traveled.

It doesn't sound like it compensates for bad aim--it just detonates the round at a specified distance from the shooter. Although smart rounds like that do apparently exist.

No. The explosive shells are time-on-target and the gun itself corrects for drop (and possibly windage) based on the range to target.

I haven't heard flechette ammunition mentioned since the 60's. Glad to see its making a come back.

Non-Lethal ammunition? What's that do, scatter little pieces of papers saying, "If I were really angry, you'd be dead by now."

Shrapnel wounds tend to be more treatable, actually

Flechettes penetrate deeply and then often fragment or bend

This will make it easier to kill the other guys, and that will save our guys lives. If I'm in the field, I'd rather have one than not.

It's really simple. The sarge tells you to kill that guy behind that rock. Well, you can either run your silly ass over there, likely getting killed on the way, or you can take your X-whatever gun, and shoot him without getting off your belly.

You decide, smartass.*

*Just added to give it the 'drill sarge' kinda feel.

"Non-Lethal ammunition? What's that do, scatter little pieces of papers saying, "If I were really angry, you'd be dead by now."

How about simply having an auto rotating tripod mounted launcher that would have a large clip of ammo attached to it, and that would be placed slightly behind a squad and launch this ammo on command given by laser pointers.

In Vietnam the first night vision scoped weapons got delivered under security escort straight to the actual troops that needed them. Just so they didn't end up on a politicians wall or a general's private collection, or worse.
