Suffering from ads?

Could someone explain to me how I dig monorail tunnels? You use hole diggers, yes, but when I try to, I can't get it to work.

If the hole diggers aren't working, that probably means the land you're doing it on is too close to water level.

Yep, I tried it higher up the slope and it worked. Oh my, I'll have to rethink my whole monorail system a bit over since I'll need to demolish a lot of stuff for it to get by... maybe "appropriate" roads...

Edit: Gah, I tried, but when I realised you can't make sharp turns, I decided to give up on anything extensive. It's just too damn expensive and space consuming. I'll probably make a connection through the city with a few stops, but I would need to reshape the entire city to integrate it into the transportation system and I don't have that kind of money yet.

The middle classes use subways yes?

All sims will take busses (and busses don't cause or suffer from congestion! - the bus stops do max out though). I actually think that sims of all wealth will take any of the transit options. Look at my city, large parts of it are completely carless and the sims are forced to use busses, rail and monorail, wait? Did I say forced? They are very happy to take the busses rail and monorail =).

Linked transport systems work really well, build bus stops at all stations, build adjacant stations when monorail/rail/subway cross, the transfers in SC4 are very quick and painless, one of the limitations of the simulator is that the concept of "waiting for the next bus/train" doesn't exist and sims just transfer over, get on thier own personal bus/train waiting for them and carry on at the speed of that type of transit to exactly where they want to go. It's all very convenient.

Rail is really cheap and can achieve somewhat tighter curves than monorail and the sims like riding it just as much (or even more) so you might consider a rail system. El Rail is the same as Monorail (can't achieve the tighter curves of rail) but you can use the "ground light rail" and do 90 degree turns as well as linking into the subway. Monorail is nice because the tracks don't suffer from congestion (the stations do though) but that's only really a useful feature for the main trunklines.

edit: I might actually try and work a ground light rail / el rail system into my city. May as well include some subway stops too heheh.

The big ocean, is anyone building on it? Is it a nono to give a person two medium sized lots, or could I build something on it? An artifical island maybe, this being Japan. I could develop the remaining third of that small Pipelines island as well.

I'm playing my turn now. Had played about half of it, then my A/C caused my circuit breaker to trip (but then auto-reset) ... which somehow kylled my computer even though I have a (normally functional) UPS. I blame groundhogs of germanic descent ... (that's an inside joke btw not an ethnic thing)

So I try again.

Okay.

http://www.geocities.com/snoopy369/index.html

Updated there, went a few months in because i'm a moron.

Tried to do the Urban Renewal thing and dump my heavy industry for hi-tech. Would have worked, but I needed to wait until I had built up some more money

So I ended the last 2 years on hi-hi-hi-high taxes and low-low-low-utility type things (trying to keep everything adequate, but barely). Also had to do a few neighbor deals with EPW and Ohnoes, feel free to cancel them of course on your end

Good news is i'm fine once my loans go away. My $400k or something of loans

1/1/25 also put up, since we're at the point of doing that five years.

I'm back in the (almost) blue again! Most of my loans are gone, and the only reason i'm back in 'red' again is I lowered taxes and whatnot (on 12/15/24) and increased services back to normal. Next time up I'm fixing up some more of my problems

Elmwood 2025: Business As Usual

Not all that much happened in Elmwood these five years, as funds took an unexpected drop when transit ridership plunged due to new regional commuting patterns.

Downtown Foodvale/Thousand Elms has seen considerable office development in the meantime.

---------------------------------------------------------------

Slag Mountain also updated to smooth the abrupt edge with fully urbanized Kenshi River City, this city is also in the attached zip

Floreat City/South Floreat 2025

In Floreat City, growth continues at an impressive rate. Development reached the far end of the mainland, with new residential development in the southeast and new industrial/commercial development in the northeast (along the avenue to the airport). The last remnants of Mr. Y's base have been shut down, and the CEO's fleet has been moved to an undisclosed location. The monorail loop has at long last been completed, to much fanfare. The airport has been upgraded again... and if commercial development continues the field will have to be expanded, a process which will require many tons of dirt as fill. A new stadium was built. Densification is occuring at the city core in Crystal City (mostly with R$/R$$).

In South Floreat, there were not many changes, but the monorail link to Yukuhashi-Kanda was built.

Both cities in one handy .rar file:

Ohnoes '25
R 83,254
C 48,085
I 10,721

Ohnoes enters a Golden Age as Operation "Culturally Assimilate Elmwood and Silicon Beach" begins.

In the opening year a Major Art Musuem, Main Library and the Ohnoes Opera House are constructed. The financial adviser suffers a hearthattack and is fed into the W2E Incinerator as the city runs low on funds for the first time (funny how building an Advanced Research Lab does that..). This slightly delays the completion of the new Subway system, to help alleviate pressure on the monorail stations and reduce commute times to around 30 minutes.

Two recycling plants are also constructed, along with the demolition of the old Coal Plants which are replaced with Oil Plants. The dictator tires of building new water pumps, demolishes them all and builds a new, larger pump that opens at 60% capacity.

Education rises to the point that the newly invented Monosyllabic Translator is required to communicate with victims of the Tartarus 'education system' which appears to involve beating disobedient workers over the head with a spanner until they "stop bad think".

Crime drops to improbably low levels, almost certainly related more to the education level than the omnipresent police helicopters which appear to serve the more important purpose of annoying the dictator with incessant buzzing.

By the end of the 5 years my profit from Transit is down over 2K, oddly the subway dramatically reduced fares because the sims could take more direct routes and thus spent less time travelling via MT. I also demolished all toll booths except one.

Boothbay & The Pipeline Isles, 2025

R: 42578
C: 19660
I: 8224

The latest 5 year plan brought major changes to Boothbay. The first came shortly after the plan's inception, when growing pressure from the city's merchants prompted the council to build a small commuter airstrip. As land was already at a premium, the Peninsula Envy Extension was built to house the new facility:

Though the council considered the idea of linking the Island of Misfit Toys to the mainland at the time of the extension, it was decided that the link would be too disruptive to the island's industry. However, a smaller terraforming effort was allowed to permit the construction of a new waste treatment facility on the island:

The city's second leap forward occured when a new intracity monorail system was built. The only form of public transportation in the city, the monorail quickly cut commute times in half when it was completed, although they have crept up again since:

The final step in the five year plan came when the city was approached by a whalewatching company to host their port facilities. Lacking a suitable location for a deepwater port, the city once again turned to the magic of garbage and used tires to produce the Gooseneck Technology Park. Filled with high tech commerce and industry, the park will soon be home to Boothbay University:

The news for the city was not all good, though, as llamas confused by fumes from the nearby wastewater plant gnawed away at the historic Sludgeview, causing it's collapse. The city's growing population has resulted in a number of other high-rises, though, so nobody really cared (other than the llamas it fell on.)

And, in the nearby Pipeline Isles, Boothbay's peninsula extension brought about an opportunity for a high-end commercial center to compliment the area's technology research center:

Olanta 2015

Alright guys, here it is finally. I stopped at 2015 just to give you guys a filler. I will go up to 2025 soon.

But in the meantime I have a gfew questions for you obviously more experianced types.

First, it seems that nobody wants to live in my city, just work. For all 15 years my Industry and Commerce indicaters have been maxed out, while my residential has been maxed low. I figured it was just a hazard of joining a game so late with everyone elses cities in the region being so developed. Sound normal?

And Second, how the hell do I get a monorail to cross a highway?

Put an end to popups!

Since i'm trying to keep my city air pollution free, and don't want big landfills in my city, i'd like to export garbage to Ohnoes or Sillicon Beach, if either of you are interested in taking it, i think you need more capacity, since i don't have the option to export yet.

Crossing monorails over highways... hmm, maybe you have to tunnel under it using the hole digging lots, or lower that section of highway to ground level..
