1.9% (2003 est.) MALI

0.8% (2003 est.) SENEGAL

2.6% (2001 est.) SUDAN

5.4% (2003 est.) NIGERIA

4.1% (2003 est.) UGANDA

12.2% (2003 est.) MOZAMBIQUE

Seems to me that Sudan and Mali, while higher than other North African countries, is still less than the sub-saharan ones.

And you were quite right about the Christians in Sudan. They are about 5%, which is higher than in other countries, but not that much overall.

Given time, I could chart percentage of muslims against the HIV prevalence rate, and I think it would show my argument pretty conclusively.

If someone digs up lists of Muslim and HIV infection percentages, I think I can do the maths.

Let's stick to African countries.

There are many countries in Africa

As Islam is not everywhere in Africa, I think the stats will be more interesting if we make a difference between other organized religions (mostly christianty), and indigenous mythologies. I'll thus have three categories: Muslim, Other (Christianty, Judaism etc.), Local.

Algeria: Muslim 99%, Other 1%. AIDS: 0.1%
Angola: Other 53%, Local 47%. AIDS: 3.9%
Benin: Muslim 20%, Other 30%, Local 50%. AIDS: 1.9%
Botswana: Other 15%, Local 85%. AIDS: 37.3% (yes, that high)
Burkina Faso: Muslim 50%, Other 10%, Local 40%. AIDS: 4.2%
Burundi: Muslim 10%, Other 67%, Local 23%. AIDS: 6%
Cameroon: Muslim 20%, Other 40%, Local 40%. AIDS: 6.9%
Central Africa: Muslim 15%, Other 50%, Local 35%. AIDS: 13.5%
Chad: Muslim 51%, Other 42%, Local 7%. AIDS: 4.8%
Comoros: Muslim 98%, Other 2%. AIDS: 0.12%
Congo Kinshasa: Muslim 10%, Other 70%, Local 20%. AIDS: 4.2%
Congo Brazzaville: Muslim 2%, Other 50%, Local 48%. AIDS: 4,9%
Cote d'Ivoire: Muslim 40%, Other 30%, Local 30%. AIDS: 7%
Djibouti: Muslim 94%, Other 6%. AIDS: 2.9%

In fact, there are plenty of diseases and injuries whose victims we can turn a cold shoulder against because often, those diseases and injuries are a result of neglect or ignorance of the victim.

Hey! Don't do that with your eyes, you might get stuck that way, and I'd feel really, really bad. See? I got sympathy. Yup, sympathy I got, my $ I need for my own ****ing medicine. Some over weight person has a heart attack and dies, I say, "damn, too bad he ate so much, he has dug his grave with his teeth." I see a gay guy reduced to skin and bones, I say, "damn, too bad he couldn't control himself, he dug his grave with his dong". In both cases, that's sympathy. It's just too bad. What makes gays different, is that they want me to pay the price, while overweight people do not. Diabetics do not, etc. What's so special about gays? You guys better than me?

Good gosh, that's quite a misinterpretation (But perhaps understandable). These are 100% recreational drugs, that she takes occasionally, and definitely not HIV medication. Besides it's all moot as she split up with me and we never had sex.

On the plus side I can sill donate blood!

Damn, I forgot about this one too. Thanks for doing the maths, TLC, and that seems a rather strong negative correlation between the two, 1.00 being a perfect correlation right?

Indeed.

Just recall the old adage "correlation is not causation".

(A glance at the map suggests there ought, for African countries, be a not inconsiderable correlation 'tween AIDS rate and the latitude of the country's capital.)

Well, that may have something to do with the growth of Islam, in Africa, that the North has more Islamic folks than the South.

Secondly, how many countries did you enter? I might do the same with more since I have a bit of free time over the next few days.

As said, I used the countries from Spiff's list.

The point about "correlation is not causation" isn't that iIslam isn't the reason, but that my math doesn't prove that it is. A test like this can falsify the hypothesis that Islam stops AIDS, but not prove it.

Gibsie - sorry 'bout that. Since you posted your GF taking drugs she would not let you see on this thread, I was taking it in the context of prescripion drugs. I normally would assume, if she is not willing to provide data, it is something she is embarressed about/worried about your reaction too, such as mental health (i.e. depression, bi-polar, schitzophrenia, etc.) or epilepsy, cancer, or similiar issues. When you mentioned South Africa, though, that caused me concern because of the extremely high rate of AIDS among sexually active adults. Remember, all the rates you here, you can increase them by 50% to double among the sexually active adults, depending on the amount of people in monogamous relationships, not dating at all, too young, etc. That makes South Africa frighteningly high.

Yeah I can see why you thought that. It was just what Jon Miller had said about rohypnol, and the way she acted when I saw her under the influence of these drugs, it hit a chord. I think she was worried about my reaction, that I'd instantly google the pills and tell her about the risks and so on (When in fact I'm very liberal about drugs).
